I went to dinner the other night with a guy I am dating, the service was great and the food was good. The place was a steakhouse. Our bill came to 63.00 and he left 6.00. I was very upset about this and ended up adding 3 extra dollars to make up for it. Was his tip appropriate? I used to be a waitress so I over tip alot.

seriously six bucks on a $63 tab!? maybe he is awful with math and a lunkhead to boot. 10% of 63 is 6.30 half of 6.30 is 3.15 so the normal polite tip for routine service is $9.45 or just flip her a ten. Great service is 20% which is...anyone, anyone, bueller, bueller, yup $12.60.
Teach that boy some manners and some math.

I don't think that $3 more were "overtipping", if it's customary in your country to leave 15-20% of the bill as a tip then it was appropriate.... in my country (Mexico), the $6 would have been ok, but when you get exceptional service you do feel like tipping a bit more (and I understand your feelings having been a waitress yourself).

I think he should have left a bit more. How was the service?? I tip at least 15% and find myself most of the time leaving 20%.

Hi, I'm sorry but his tip of 6 was way short.

An appropiate tip is 15%, and if you got good service and liked the place, 20% is good. The 15% would come out to like 73 and the 20% to around 76....

i was a server trainer for a family restaurant and 10% of the check is avarage but if the service was good a little more would have been better espicialy if you had a beer with dinner. usally if you were served beer you tip a littel more cause some wait staff have to split tip with the bar.

HIs tip was inappropriate. I'd talk to him about it. When I was dating my husband, I discovered that he was a poor tipper. I made up for the shortfall once or twice, but then we discussed the importance of leaving 20% tips, less only if the service was not good, and more if examplary, and now he leaves appropriate tips.

He left a bit less than 10%.

You bumped it up to just under 15%, which is in range.

If the service was great, I'd have left 20%.

His behavior is very odd; according to friends of mine who've waitressed, it's guys on dates who are the biggest tippers (trying to impress the dates).

His tip should have been 15 or 20% depending on the level of restaurant, quality of food and service. You were right to add to his measly 10%.

His tip sucked. That's awful! I always tip 20% if the service is GREAT, 15% if its Good and 10% if it's bad...Good for you on adding the extra 3 bucks!

H e l l no it wasn't. 15% is the lowest you should tip. $6 wasn't even 10% And with the prices of everything today if you have a good server I'd tip 20%. Servers only get paid $2.15 an hour and get taxed on their tips whether they make them or not. And remember peeps if your food comes out wrong don't take it out on the server....it's the cooks fault
