I am using a Mac with OS X ver10.4.10
Frequently I will lose the ability to rename folders and files. I can't click once on the name bar and it highlights and turns into a box as if ready to rename. But then when I try to type a new name nothing changes. The keyboard is fine and connected. I can't even copy and paste a new name. What causes this and is there a better way to prevent this glitch rather that having to restart.

i too have issues with this sometimes. the way you click doesnt always give the desired result.

click once, wait for the file to highlight
click once more on the text of the file name
it will turn to an editable white box

or....

select the file
press command (apple key) i
an info box appear, click on the name and extension tab and you can rename from there.

Single click the Box that holds the name below the folder and then when it all changes to Blue start typing.
