When someone pays with a check... You have to write on the check. Don't you draw a plus sign sort of thing. But what do you write in the different quadrants? Isn't it expiration date, license number etc (and in which quadrant)?

This is defined by a company which will guarantee the check. Usually, the diff quadrants contain

Driver's Lic. Number
Exp Date
Initials of Clerk
Authorization Code

The other person who responded is exactly right. It is determined by the company that verifies the check. I work at a privately owned retail store and i need to put the state in the upper left box, DL# in the top right box, Date of Birth in the bottom left, and then the confirmation number i receive after the check is approved in the bottom right.
