there's been a wild raccoon coming to my yard for the last week. well, he's not really wild, in fact, he seems quite tame. he comes almost right up to me when i have food for him. i know they're usually pretty clean animals, but he seems to have lots of foamy stuff around his mouth and i was wondering how i could clean that up for him without stressing him out. do you think he'll let me hold him and wash him? he's actually on my porch again lol. i'm gonna try to catch him - brb

well, if you have himin your house, you can corner him and wash him up, he shouldn't hold a grudge once he's clean...

Raccoons may look sweet but they are wild animals and are actually ILLEGAL to have as pets. A lady I used to work with had one and feed it baby food while he was a baby and feed table food once he got older....it seemed to work. But when she had a baby the raccoon wanted to harm the baby because they DO NOT get along with children!! She ended up giving the raccoon to the wild life department in our town and you should do the same. Raccoons are nice as babies but once full grown they become more vicious and want to bite things and scratch on different types of things. The lady always came in with scratches from the raccoon. Please call your local wild life to come and get the raccoon...this would be best for you and the raccoon both!!!

Not a good idea. Raccoons are carriers of rabies. They tend to seem harmless but in reality, they can be little vicious animals. I saw a raccoon tear through a litter of puppies before. Puppies all had to be destroyed because the raccoon tested positive for rabies.

Not a good idea to try to keep a raccoon as a pet. Might even be illegal.

Raccoons

are susceptible to distemper, you may want to consider having the raccoon(s) vaccinated for distemper as well as against rabies. If you are concerned about rabies, you may want to consider having a pre-exposure vaccine for anyone who will be handling the animals-call your vet for further information. Furthermore, with all animals, you should always take precautions to avoid being bitten while you are handling the animal.

**In some jurisdictions it is illegal to care for raccoons and you should consult your government wildlife agency.

they like peanuts, sweets, fruits, bread, peanut butter, and especially cat and dog food. Like feeding humans, though, don't overload them with treats -- make those for special occasions, and leave the healthier stuff for most of the time.

You shouldn't.

It is a wild animal and should not be made into a pet.

I believe in most states it is illegal to keep a pet like that.

Especially if he has foamy stuff around his mouth- yeh yeh, you know rabies IS making a come back in wildlife especially in places like Texas and Louisiana.

Leave it alone, and I seriously hope this is a fake question

PLEASE do not interfere with that coon. Racoons that are healthy do not come out during the day. That foam along with the foam on his mouth could be signs of Rabies.

It is illeagal to keep wild animals as pets. If you want to feed him, fine. DO NOT TRY AND CATCH HIM!!!! A full grown raccoon can kill a full grown dog. Those claws are like razors. Please listen to me. I know what I'm talking about. I work with a wildlife rehabber.

Leave it dry dog food, fruits, vegtables things like that. Do not feed him by hand if you get bitten, that means you have to go through a series of Rabies shots.

He's foaming at the mouth because he now associates you with eating. Much like Pavlov's dog and the bell. You have conditioned him to correlate your presence with food.

if he has lots of foamy stuff around his mouth, he's probably rabid. DO NOT TOUCH HIM!!!! LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!!! racoons were made to survive on their own and do not need a humans help!!!!

Um if you catch him, I suggest shots... But they like cat food! They ALWAYS show up on my porch too, and they're usually pretty friendly. You'd think they'd be scared of you but no they aren't... So yes, from what I know they like cat food, and maybe scraps too, they'll probably take what they can get. And shots would be a good thing for him... You should name him Bandit! :) Good luck.
