My daughter is 13 years old and has been suffering really bad toothache for the past 3 weeks. Anyway, to cut a loooooooong story short, the dentist said that she has her wisdom tooth coming through on the one side and right next to it is a rotten tooth which is going to cost us about 150 euros to fill. Shouldn't we rather just have the rotten removed and allow the wisdom tooth to take it's place?

Come on you clever clever dental experts!

Well if it's been hurting her for 3 weeks chances are her tooth needs a root canal. When a tooth has had a root canal it gets really weak and then it needs a crown. (which is very expensive). If you don't place a crown on the tooth it will eventually break, and have to be removed anyway.

So I say, if she needs a root canal, you should follow it up with a crown. If you don't it will eventually break.

If it's just a filling and the dentist is sure that the tooth will be ok, then do it.

It's always better to try and save a tooth, but if it's not done properly sometimes the best option is removal.

well its early for a wisdom tooth! it sounds like the dentist wants to make some cash . i would say its best to get the rotton tooth out then it cant cause anymore problems. and the wisdom tooth would then have pleany of room.

not quiet sure why your girls tooth is rotten? does she not go to the dentist on a regular basis? and as she is only a child why do you have to pay? she sounds very young to have a wisdom tooth, they dont usually arrive till adulthood. anyway to answer your question. get it filled.

Upper wisdom teeth come in quite nicely into the place of a 2nd molar extraction- lower wisdom teeth seem to tip into position and are not ideal .

HELLO FLORENCE,

YOUR QUESTION IS NOT BORING. AS A CONCERNED PARENT THIS IS A LEGITIMATE QUESTION. FOR STARTERS, THE REPAIRED TOOTH MAY FAIL TREATMENT IN THE FUTURE AND NEED EXTRACTION ANYWAY.
ALLOWING THE WISDOM TOOTH TO GROW AND TAKE THE PLACE OF THE SECOND MOLAR IS A GOOD DECISION. LIMITED ORTHODONTICS FOR THIS TOOTH MAY BE NEEDED TO MAKE SURE IT GROWS INTO PROPER POSITION.

At 13, shouldn't her dental work be free?
Anyway, I hope it gets sorted, and she's pain free soon.x
