You know Dale wouldn't have signed over controlling share of the company to Junior if he were alive, so why should his business partner and current owner of the team? The company was not Juniors. He was a hired driver. Every single problem that has occurred with DEI and the Junior situation have all stemmed from Juniors greed and selfishness. It was not his company to demand controlling share of. The number 8 was contracted to DEI, not Junior. Kudos to Teresa. Hendrick should not have made any conscessions for Junior either and made him drive the number 5 or 25. I still can't believe Hendrick got rid of the 25 seeing it was the number his son Ricky drove.

I have no real opinion....I'm just here to see the answers that this question stirs up! :-)
EDIT: OK, after seeing the answer below I have to respond. Teresa didn't jip Hendrick out of anything by keeping the number 8. That move will actually make HMS a lot of money. People will now be buying new Dale Jr. gear, which HMS will get a cut of. Had he kept the number 8, many people would be content with the gear that they had.

I have a feeling that everyone who thinks Teresa is a witch for not letting Jr keep the 8 are the ones who were dumb enough to get an 8 tattoo. Now everyone will think those clowns are Mark Martin fans.

so what? Sr changed his number too and the number he changed to made him the most popular driver in nascar. now think of it this way, junior will have 6 8s on his car not just 3. now from a business standpoint, Teresa basicaly jipped Hendricks of getting a lot of money. Think of it as if she gave hendricks the number, Jr. would still have his old number and make a lot more money in merchandise than say if teresa keaped the number. Teresa could have sold it but in all honesty, who would buy a number for a couple million? keep that couple million and make a race car, not just a number to put on the side of a race car.

JR should have started over fresh when he moved to Hendrick. That means no reference to the 8...his number should have been completely different, he should have left tony eury jr back at DEI. I dont care if their family...the connection just hasnt worked. They needed to team him up with a veteran crew chief who he could work with and build a relationship with. But it doesnt matter. Jr will prove next year why its not better to be the most popular drive rather then the best driver because he still wont get the job done in GREAT equipment.

I agree this is a past matter. Junior is now #88 and I believe the fans and Junior has accepted this. However, it really showed a bad side of Teresa. Some of her decisions could have been business related, but to hold back a number that is connected so much to the Earnhardt family is spiteful. Her conscious should bother her.

I think that it is time to let this go and move on. As was said it is just a number. The fans that follow Jr. will follow him as a driver not as a number.
The Dale Earnhardt Sr. "family" is more than just one person. Let the issues in their family be settled where they belong...in private.
Lets get back to the sport of racing and leave the drama for the TV soaps.

She's got some serious personal issues. I'm sure Dale Earnhardt is rolling in his grave. Then again, where would DEI be without the #8 car. Maybe when she gets old or dies or something, Dale Earnhardt Jr. will go back to DEI and drive the #8 car again!

#8 are given to the teams and the team issues it to a driver. Since Jr chose to leave then he can't take "his" number. They aren't for sale or transferable to other teams. His new # will be 88.

This is response to buchshot's remark. It could be worse, but Jr. will never be able to carry Mark's jock strap.
