I live with my girlfriend and we both obviously have our own cars and car insurance on our own. Should I add her as a driver of my vehicle just in case something happens when she is driving? I asked my company and they asked if she drove it more than 12 times a year. In the instance of an accident, there is obviously no way they would know if she drove it once or 100 times that year - so are we adequately covered if I do not add her?

In most cases, as long as she has her own vehicle with her own insurance, your insurance carrier will add her as a non-rated driver. This acknowledges that they are aware that she is in the household but they know she has her own car so she will primarily be operating her own vehicle. I would recommend that you have your agent or your carrier at least aware of this in writing that she is now residing with you and they will be able to assist you in determining if she needs to be added as a driver, a non-rated driver or an excluded driver (Which would only be in the case that she will NEVER be operating your vehicle!!!). This is just to make certain that there is adequate coverage for her and yourself in the event that there is a loss. No one should hide things from their insurance company as they are there to protect a person-in the event that an insurance company finds out that you intentionally withheld information regarding pertinent information, they could potentially rescind your policy, in turn, void out the policy alltogether and deny coverage for any subsequent accidents. Just a quick phone call is all it should take-Good luck!!!

The big question is whether you are insured if she has an accident while driving your car. Ask that, bluntly, of your insurance agent, and don't accept any answer other than yes or no.

The amount of damage a single accident can cause is enormous, far more than most people could absorb in the event you're not covered.

Probably not, if she is at the same address they know she has 365/24 access to your car. If you claim "this is the first time she ever drove it" they aren't going to believe you. Add her as a secondary driver and maybe even add yourself as secondary on hers. Perhaps you can get a multi-car discount that would make it the same or even cheaper that way if you both use the same company.

Doing that, even if it costs a little, would remove any doubt should the worst happen.

Since insurance follows the vehicle and not the driver, you do not have to add her to your policy. Further, most states will not allow you to be listed equally on the policy until you are married. If you do get married, you may want to put everything all on one policy to save money. One policy with two drivers and two vehicles is obviously more than one policy with one driver and one vehicle, but less than two policies with one driver and one vehicle each.

If she is not named on the policy, and her insurance does not cover her in any vehicle she drives, I would add her to your policy. Should she have an accident while driving your car, you may find that she is not covered. The insurance company will not be as "friendly" as they were when you inquired about it.
