I just got a root canal done (as in I just walked in the door coming back from my appointment 5 minutes ago), and I was wondering how long it takes for the novacaine to wear off and how long it takes to have the perm. filling put in place?

Oh, I had five shots of novacaine if that factors into the time period at all.

When you get a root canal your tooth get's very weak. I don't know if you dentist spoke to you about getting a post and a crown, it is very important.

If the dentist only puts a permanent filling on the tooth it could break and cause problems in the future. And since the tooth has no nerves in it anymore it can discolour. The post is placed into the tooth and the crown (made in porcelin to match your tooth colour) is placed over the tooth. And it looks very natural.

All in all you should book 3 appointments.
the first will be to place the post and a filling
The second to shave down the tooth, take moulds, and receive a temporary crown made from plastic.
The third is to remove the temporary crown and place your specially made porcelin crown.

Speak to your dentist before hand and have him or her explain it to you better.

The novacaine should wear off in about 30 mins to 1 and a half hours, it varys person to person.

You may want to rinse with warm water and salt it will help to sooth your gums a bit.

I hope you feel better:)

The dentist I used to work with used to tell patients that the general maximum time for anaesthesia to wear off is about 2 hours. So, try not to chew until the numbness has worn off or you may bite your cheek without realising. The dentist will probably want to wait at least 5 days for the root canal tooth to settle down and so they can deal with any problems, rather than having to remove a brand new filling etc.
The time taken to place the filling will depend on the size of the cavity and what he/she and you decide is the best option. You may need a crown, but you could have an amalgam (black, mercury containing) or composite (white) filling. I'd usually schedule between 20 minutes (for a small mercury filling to 1 1/2 hours (for a large white filling).
I hope this helps

In addition to every else's answers, I'd like to add that the amount of time the numbness will wear off also depends on whether or not epinepherine was in the anesthetic. If not, the time will be shorter for it to wear off.

The permanent filling will not be coming from the lab. A crown will...

~just thought I'd add those comments to those already posted.

You can have the permanent filling put in as soon as the dentist gets it back from the lab. I lived with a temp one for 2 years!!

HELLO NOX,

THE ANESTHETIC WILL LAST AS LONG AS IT TAKES YOUR BODY TO METABOLIZE THE CHEMICAL.
FYI, THE ROOT CANALED TOOTH WILL EVENTUALLY BECOME BRITTLE AND MAY FRACTURE. A CROWN IS BEST FOR PREVENTING THIS.
