This is a 2 part question......

I am a Christian.....but this is open to atheists & believers alike.
I will not choose a best answer based on bias.......I will choose it based on content & overall honesty from you.

1) What do you think would happen in our society if all 9 Supreme Court justices were atheists?

2) Flip-side.....what would happen if all 9 were Christians?

Thanks,

Primo

All atheist
If they are honest, they will stick to the constitution and make judgments based on the interpretation of such document. If they have an agenda, they will move religion out from every institution and govern what can and what cannot can be taught in the church. (taking place right now)

All Christian
If they are honest, they will stick to the constitution and make judgments based on the original intent of such document. They would also seek to reverse the damage caused by the likes of the ACLU in driving religion out our of society. Something that was never meant to be done by the founders of our nation.

Personally, I'm glad there is a balance for debate and consideration on all such sweeping, legal matters.

Well, with in the question there seems to be an underlying question as to whether an atheist can be a moral or a righteous judge and that only a Christian--led by the scriptures and God's Holy Spirit can truly be a source of righteousness and moral judgement.

I would have to say that if someone is truly God-fearing and know they are accountable to God on judgement day for all that they have done--they would consider the long-term effects of any decision they make from a spiritual standpoint.

What is important for a judge is to understand the Constitution and our rights under the Constitution. Even the constitution recognizes that our rights are given to us by God. In a court of law we swear to tell the truth--laying a hand on the BIBLE (or Koran, or other Holy Book).
I would think that an atheist court would have a very hard time following this. I would think that a court filled with nine atheists would attempt to find every opportunity to strip the constituion from it's Godly origins. Most of our laws are based on the scriptures. You can not separate God from the foundations of the constitution--to do so would destroy this country.

I would hope that if nine justices were all committed Christians that they would pray over each and every decision and do their best to apply Godly standards of justice for all that come before the court. Morality isn't exclusive to Christians. An atheist can still be moral.

Admittedly, as a Canadian, I'm not that familiar with the Supreme Court justices, or how they have ruled.

It does seem kind of weird that you would put that much power in the hands of the Judicial Branch, and then make the heads of that branch appointees of the Executive Branch, but that's just you guys I guess.

I haven't seen much evidence that any of the Supreme Court Justices base all or even most of their decisions on their religious beliefs. It seems like the majority of them are actually based on legal opinion and Constitutional considerations.

So I don't think there would be much difference to society, regardless of the religions of the judges. Perhaps if they were all fanatically devoted adherents to any one philosophy, there might be some subversion of the justice system - i.e. if they were all rabid Scientologists, or Vodun houngans, or ultra-Maoists or something.

It should make no difference. They are supposed to decide on the interpretation of the constitution and the laws passed by congress.

Since they are human this is not always possible. However, since they are highly educated judges they should be better at it than Most of us.

Since this is a secular country then I would like to believe that atheists would stand a better chance of doing this than theists. However, if I was in on the selection process I would much prefer a balanced christian than a biased atheist.

Honestly?
I feel if all were Christians (real christians) There'd be an uprising all over the nation.
Primarily because most people in this world are not Christian.
(U see how they treat their President who claims to be one, yet who knows what Bush does in his personal time.)
I feel as if it would make a difference..but only a very small one considering the downfall of this entire world is predestined because of the sin in this world...

If all were atheists however....I don't really feel as if many judgments would be made for the better...I feel as more would be made for the worse. And the decline in morale would hasten.
Yet this is what is intended to happen.
Because this is pretty much progression to our already determined outcome.

Have a blessed day :)

1.) I think if all 9 Justices were atheists, then most likely, then decisions would be made without any sort of agenda or dogma driving them. In all reality, if all 9 were atheists, then most likely, so too would the rest of the world be.

2.) If all 9 were Christians, particularly fundamentalists, then it would spark a huge outrage and a backlash not only from atheists, but Muslims, Jews, etc. I think their first order of business would be to repeal abortion, which would NOT eliminate abortion, but dramatically increase the number of "coat hanger" abortions that take place.

I would hope that the judges' professionalism would keep them allowing their personal biases to influence their judgeship. But, people being people I believe that to be a false hope.

Because of the kind of mindset it takes to be an atheist (unmovingly realistic) an atheist judge would like be more compelled to follow the letter of the law ignoring compassion.

A Christian judge _might_ allow compassion to enter, but would judge the law based on a very specific morality-based set of values which may or may not be a good thing.

I dislike extremists of any stripe; I see little difference between the extremist Islamics who are causing all the current problems and the so-called "Neo-con christians." Same animal, different stripes.

If all 9 were Baptists ( christians ) then the word of God would be USED in every action-- I would assume they would seek the Lord in every decesion, for His guidance and wisdom...and that is by looking to the word of God.

If by all atheists, I truly think things would become chaotic and there would be many holes. Because there is no "rock" involved, no groundation and it seems everything would fall apart. God is our rock! I love Psalm 32:8 that say "I will instruct you in the way you should go, I will counsel you with my eye upon you"
(Some say David said this, regarding him being king and the people listening to his instruction, but I believe this is GOD! Because it is God who instructs us and gives us counsel when our eyes are on Him--)

The supreme court is to decide issues based on constitutionality-not religious beliefs or political beliefs. In many cases it doesn't work that way if you get too many of either liberals or conservatives on the court. Each justice seems to interpret the constitution in a different way based on their beliefs either religious or political. An unbalanced court could rewrite the constitution with their decisions.
