I don't think they're ready to discontinue the model so quickly. It should be around for a while, so making the purchase in November will be ok.

Processor "Cell" is so good, that it's use shouldn't be limited to PS3 only. I've red over the internet, that Toshiba is buying those chips in order to produce next-gen home computers, professional servers and laptops. It's even better for PS3 owners, because more serious developers see and understand this chip - more games we'll get. Sony officials annonced life span of PS3 consoles - from 7 to 10 years (like PS2 - games are still being developed for it, PS2 is still in production).

Toshiba and Sony will enter into a venture to continue to make the chips, which are used inside the PlayStation 3 console, with a final agreement on the terms and specifics of this undertaking to be firmed up in March 2008.
That's the quote I just took from the article link you just posted. Sounds to me like they are going to be starting a "joint venture"...together...I don't think you'll be seeing the "end of" PS3.

NO, they arent getting rid of the PS3, the are selling the CHIP, one piece of the PS3 to Toshiba, in order to cut their production costs, and thus their losses.

I highly doubt that it will get discontinued... but I tell you what... as a fan of SONY and the Playstation, I really wish they would stop confusing the heck out of consumers with all the discontinued versions, new versions, different configurations and constant price changes.
I'm pretty informed on the latest PS3 news and it's hard for even ME to keep up with all the changes, announcements, regions and price changes.
I know SONY is trying to adjust to satisfy demand, but honestly, I think it's getting ridiculous already.

Because they were losing money on the PS3 due to high cost of production, this should actually lower their cost a bit and make the PS3 more successful. They have no intention on discontinuing the PS3, it was a cost move. A plant that they don't have to pay the electric on, wages for the production lines on, the upkeep of the plant on, and all the other expenses of running a plant.

Toshiba and apple will be using the cell broadband chips in their high end computers ...Which means that even more programmers for games will be familiar with using the chip to it's full potential....THis is a good thing for ps3 because it shows just how cutting edge they are and that the ps3 will infact have a long third party supported gaming and application computer life....
