Just wondering if anyone knew if engagement rings usually go on sale the day after Thanksgiving. Anyone know of any stores that usually mark them down a lot?

They don't. Engagement rings are not usually a spontaneous buy, and not a quick purchase. Usually marking something 30% off is to get you to go in a purchase something you wouldn't have. It makes the company go into the black. Jewelry stores have a very large profit markup so they are usually not in the red in order to need a large day that takes them in the black.

Especially since jewelry is something you negotiate with on the spot, its the same price year round. If they did a big sale, you'd still try to negotiate. Also it takes several hours with a jeweler to get the perfect ring. Most men aren't going to pick an inferior ring just b/c that one is marked down. They want the perfect ring for that perfect woman.

Probably not. I use to manage a jewelry store, a chain one at that, and we were not busy on Black Friday nor did we have any special sales. The best way to save is find a reputable jeweler online, especially if you know what you are looking for. My friend's fiance got her ring at whiteflash.com, a build it yourself type site, and her ring appraised at double what they paid for it. Another of our friends also bought from there with excellent results. If do go the online route be sure they have a policy that you can get your money back if you don't like the ring and take the ring to a reputable locally owned shop and have it looked at if you intend to keep it. worldjewels.com has great prices but I have no personal experience with them. Costco is another great place to buy. There jewelry tends to be 1/2 the price of the same type items elsewhere.

That day is not the day to get a deal on an engagement ring. That day the jewelry stores will be pushing the latest "fashion" item, appropriate for Holiday gift giving.

Take your time, visit several stores and then make your choice.
Best wishes to both of you

I think the only way for you to find out is to go check out prices now, write them down, then on Black Friday go check and see how much the rings are.

Doubtful.

They can point you to stores with good deals, and they also have reviews of simulants like CZ's and alternatives like Moissanite. For a 1 ct moissanite ring, you'll pay $439 and no one will know it isn't a diamond but you and your fiancee (notice how I said fiancee - make sure you consult her before you buy a diamond alternative).

I would imagine the prices would go up around that time since a lot of guys propose during the holidays (Xmas or New Year's, etc).
But it never hurts to check it out.
I suggest going to 4 or 5 different stores, seeing what prices they have and compare/contrast.

Wow, I was like 'wtf, what is wrong with you' then I realized that 'black Friday' in the states is different from what it means here. Black Friday is the day we remember one of Alberta's worst natural disasters. But just check around for places having sales, any diamond/jewelery stores are good to look and compare prices. Good luck.
