My yellow lab has a vaginal prolapse! Apparantly it is something that happens at the 1st heat where the vagina actually begins coming out of the vulva. The emergency vet said it may go back in on its own after the heat is over if I make sure to keep it moist! Anybody know of any cases that this has happened? I've only read that surgery will fix it!

Once a prolapse occurs it is more likely to recurr. Yes they are pretty gross.

Make sure that your dog can still urinate, if she can't she needs to get back to the vet right away. Clean the area with sterile saline solution a few times a day. You need to prevent your dog licking or chewing on the prolapse, so you may need to get an elizabethan collar to put on her.

The chances of your dog prolapsing again at her next heat are very very high. To prevent it happening again you should her spayed as soon as possible after this cycle. Each time it occurs it can get worse. This is a dog that should never be bred, its to risky.

Prolapse In Dogs

Yes, I have a female pit bull that also had vaginal prolapse during her first time in heat. My heart went out to her. Because it looked painful, especially when she sat down. It seemed to discomfort her, but she never cried, or acted as though it was hurting. Luckly, after her heat was over, it did get better, although it still doesn't look perfectly normal.

If I were you, I would wait until after she is done going in heat, and see how things look, after the swelling goes down.

Kudos for taking her to the vet. That was the definitely the right thing to do. I know it's frustrating when the vet doesn't give you much help in solving the problem, but atleast you know what's going on now.

Anything with a vagina can have vaginal prolapse. It must not be "complete", that's when surgery is the only answer. I would follow the vet's advice of waiting for the heat to be over...don't let her get pregnant please. You may have to spay her aftewards. It would be for her own benefit.

Your dog will probably need surgery. This could have been avoided by spaying before her first heat. I'd suggest you make an appointment ASAP to get both of these things taken care of.

i've heard of it in cattle and horses, but not dogs... from what i know, it should go back on it's own after heat is over... i would suggest having the animal spayed and surgery to fix the problem... then you won't have to worry about it anymore..

Please, have her spayed as soon as you can. While this episode may not be serious enough to warrant emergency surgery, I just wouldn't want to risk it again or risk any avoidable health problems for my dog.
