My daughter left home for University and my (7yrs old) German Sheppard is kind of blue and not eating, I did the egg white secret that she used to do once in a while, and he eats most of his food now, I read somewhere is good for their hair, and somewhere that I shouldn't be doing this because...can't remember why.

Should I keep doing it , or not? He feeds once a day and I mix his dry (Purina) food with one egg white, but don't want him sick.
Please advice if you are a professional with animals and can explain why I should or shouldn't continue with this.
Thank you

The reason they say not to give raw eggs to dogs is because it can affect the absorption of biotin. However your dog would have to very large amounts of raw egg for this to happen.

It is fine to do what you are doing, but using the entire egg not just the white would be even better. Even the shells. Eggshells are full calcium and are great for the dog too.

I would consider changing his food though. Purina foods are pretty low quality. They contain alot of fillers, dyes, and chemical preservatives.

A couple of high quality foods are Canidae, Innova, and Wellness.

High quality foods may seem more expensive, but you will end up feeding less of a high quality food because they are more digestable than low quality ones. So it comes out about the same. Your dog will also be healthier, so less vet bills.

The other plus with high quality foods is that since your dog digests more of what it eats, that means less of it comes back out. A great bonus especially with a large dog like a GSD.

The other thing I'd consider is having your dog in for a check up just to be on the safe side, especially with his age. There may be something medical that is causing his lack of appetite.

Purina is a very low quality food. I don't blame the dog for not eating it lol. I suggest switching to something along the lines of Canidae, Innova, Timberwolf Organics or even consider the B.A.R.F diet.

If you are curious as to why Purina is a low quality food do some research on the hidden meaning of dog food ingrediants and compare it to the ingrediant list on your bag of dog food. It' will make you sick.

I dont see a problem with raw eggs - in fact, my mom feeds her dogs the whole egg...shell and all...and she shows her dogs. I find it interesting that on that site with foods not to feed your dog are poultry bones and fish. Well...I feed my dogs a raw diet and they eat chicken and turkey bones all the time...when was the last time you heard of a wolf turn down a live chicken or turkey because poultry was bad for them?? The only thing wrong with this is if they are cooked. Bones splinter if cooked. Raw is ok. As for fish...um, really? I dont feed my dogs a large quantity of fish, but again, wolves will not turn down eating fish either. This is all in my humble opinion - as I know feeding raw is still very controversial and not popular on the YA site. I get slammed for it all the time, but I have 5 dogs on it and all are doing VERY well.
