Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.

What does it mean?

I think it means an inner struggle. But hes asking why hes struggling when all he has to do is put his hope and thoughts in God. Hes asking himself why he feels so down when God is his savior.

Have you ever felt blue without really having a reason to feel that way?

The writer of this Psalm did -- then said, "I should just focus on God and praise God and then I won't feel so downcast."

It is self -positive reinforcement... a pep talk to self... trust God and all will be well. A self fulfilling prophecy. Instead of stopping at I am depressed ' downcast' you go on to say God is you way out! And positive affirmations ... praising God's goodness help you see the light.

It means when your tests & trials get so hard that we sometimes think God has left us when in realality he has not forsaken us., This verse is saying why are thou cast down oh my Soul, Not God why have you cast me down, many times God will allows us to be tested & it will seem like God has left us, But he leaves no one that trust in him, so even when you are downcast, do what this verse says FOR I SHALL PRAISE HIM.

David was saddened because of the death of his child and it was his way of self encouragement. "Why and I sad and depressed when the joy of God is my strength? I will continue to praise the Lord even during this troublesome time because he deserves my praise and worship."

i think he is referring to the fact that his enemies were getting the best of him and that he is troubled at the thoughts of doing something that caused god to turn his enemies upon him.

it causes me to think of job he had done nothing wrong but he was asking what he had done because his enemies were getting the best of him.
