Look at the three temptations that satan used:
1) After 40 days of fasting, satan tempted him to use his powers to create food. While it may seem like a "trifle" - what harm is there in eating - it was a serious matter. It was not the bread that was the issue, but the idea that he was to do it "if" he was the son of God. Back to the same thing satan used on Eve - eat so that you can be like God.
2) Jump off the temple and let angels save you. A temptation to done something "specatular" to demonstrate who he is. While Jesus performed many miracles, they were always because people needed the results (the sick needed healing, the hungry needed food, etc) This temptation was to advance his kingdom, not by love and teaching, but by showmanship. To do so would have destroyed his entire ministry.
3) Bow down to satan and worship him in exchange for the kingdoms of the earth. Fact is that satan has control over many of the kingdoms, systems and people of the earth. And he could have given them to Jesus without Jesus having to die. A very real temptation - get back the world without having to suffer. But Jesus knew that while he might be legal control of the earth that way, he would not get control of men's hearts and minds. So in the end, the world would not be changed.
They were very real temptations designed to keep Jesus from acomplishing his purpose here on earth.

Not when Satan puts in a personal appearance. Jesus knew the temptations were real. He knew all the governments of the world were Satan's to offer. He also knew how his Father felt about it by answering each time, "It is written...." Satan knew better than to deny this to Jesus. Satan also knew if he could get Jesus to sin, everything the Bible and God had planned would be ruined.
So it was no little thing.

You could also look at the temptation of Christ in the desert as Jesus' final rejection of the ego complex. His small "self" encourages him to serve him and Jesus rejects it. It is a parable about the act of selflessness and what little to offer the temporal world has. This is what made Jesus an enlightened being. Whenever anyone rejects the self indulging nature of ego and chooses to act in salvation of mankind, he becomes a Bodhisattva - as was Jesus.

He allowed himself to be tempted as a lesson for us that just because Satan puts ideas into your head doesn't mean you have to bow to him. Jesus was tempted and still remained Holy. This is an example for us to follow.
