I know it seems like an easy answer, but if you can afford counseling, go for it and ask your therapist to help you find out why you have this need to talk, talk, talk. (I came from a home with parents who both worked and did not have time to talk to me, ask me about my life etcetera. I find such relief even now -at age 50- in having someone really listen to me that I have trouble turning it off)

If you are going into a social situation where you are concerned about overwhelming people (or alienating them) by talking too much, try this exercise. Before you leave, sit down at your computer, or with a pen and a notebook, and write, write write everything you can think to write. How you feel about anything that is on your mind. Writing does for me what talking does, it allows me to get things out in the open which enables me to decide how I feel about it.

At that point you may have released enough steam to LISTEN as much as you talk, which is the goal.

I'm a talkaholic too, so the answers really apply to me too. I try to think of questions I can ask and as they are being answered, I try to relate to them, and I try to think of another open ended question. I don't want to ask, yes or no things.

I'm doing it again.

try to imagine what you want to say and how you want to say it. say it to yourself first in your mind and then say it out loud. give other people time to talk too. It will be hard but practice and you can slowly improve. good luck.
