My mother and father in law have the same habit. Although I have been a member of the family well over 20 years, it is still unnerving -- can only imagine how a stranger may feel.

It is not a condition you cannot control -- it is a condition you choose not to control. A very good solution is to think before you speak. Take your time, think, edit if necessary, then speak.

It is always better to listen when you have nothing to say,is an old proverb, but a wise one.People are not equiped to handle the truth, they can criticise you or make remarks that are hurtful, so why worry about their feelings. You can also take the advice given on here ,be two faced the same as others ,hide your true feelings.

This is a matter of maturity. As we get older, we are expected to learn to self-regulate - everything from the way we handle bodily functions to the way we control our speech and facial expressions. You can not use, "That's just the way I am" as an excuse, especially if you know it offends people - that just makes you sound cruel and self-centered. Try not to respond immediately to anything. Give it a count of three before you say anything, and think about what you are about to say. You will mess up at first, but it will become easier over time.

I have a friend who is also very volatile. And it can be a real drag to have to deal with him on a daily basis. If you can't stop and think about what you may say to hurt someone ,at least have the decency to apologize. But mean it.

My father taught me a lesson one day. He made me repeat again and again: "Maturity consists in submitting the impulses to reason".
I hope the translation into English is correct.
Basically, he was saying that as we grow up we need to learn to control our impulses.
I am not calling you immature, I'm suggesting you consciously try to be more mature, that is, control your impulses.

Before you answer, pinch your arm or hand, it'll remind you to slow down and think before speaking.

Learn to put a pause between thinking and speaking. Never get excited, just always stop and think before you speak. Be cool.
