My cat has been throwing up water at about 6 am ever since the vet put him on a strict diet (only a couple of days ago) - two feedings, one in the morning, one in the early evening. Is it possible he overcompensating for his lack of food at night by drinking too much water? Should I change his feeding time?

He was getting a little heavy, so he's still on the same food, but it's not out all the time. The food is Innova Evo.

It may be. Or it might be that there is something wrong with the food.

Try giving your kitty 3 smaller servings if you can, but make sure not to increase the amount of food he eats. If that doesn't work, tell the vet so you can figure out a way to make his tummy more comfortable.

Good luck!

You did not say the reason for this diet and I wondered about that. Your cat should not be throwing up water at any time. They usually do not drink too much and if they are drinking more water then usual then there is a problem. You also did not say if you changed the food that you were feeding your cat. This would certainly have a lot to do with it all. Since your bet has changed his diet then I would say to give him a call and ask why the cat would be doing this. There are so many reasons why a cat would vomit. Kidney problems and reaction to certain foods. I do not think that the cat is vomiting water because of when you feed it! There is another reason for this. If you changed the cats food then I would say that is the reason. My cat was on Science diet and she had been on it for years but the last few months she would vomit every time she ate it. She was getting very skinny. I changed the food and she has not got sick since. I think there was something in the food that should not have been there. Your cat may be experiencing the same type of problem with food. Please call your vet.

He might be doing what you are suggesting. See if you can either pull the water overnight or offer less water at night so he can't overdo it. Also, ask your vet if you can try 3 or 4 feedings a day and then slowly cut back to 2 a day--dividing the total daily food in thirds or fourths as well. That way he will have better spaced feeding times.

If it's been happening since the vet put your cat on the new diet, I would call the vet right away and tell them what's been going on. This diet may not be the best one for your cat. I found that several smaller meals throughout the day worked for my cat so that he wouldn't throw up. Good luck!

Hi

Please add some details. What kind of diet and why?\

Thanks for adding. Innova evo dry is a great quality for a dry food but for health and losiong weight, your cat would be much better off on canned foods w/o gravy. Also, cats like to eat small meals throughout the day. The water drinking is because there is not enough water in dry foods to begin with. Cats get most of their water needs from their prey/food.
Please check the links at the bottom of this

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean?

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms
The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process them. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in
Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bpo_ch4a.php

yes it sounds like he is not getting full enough and drinking to much water to replace the food. I would contact the vet who put him on the diet about whats going on it could also just be him getting use to a new food. So talk to the vet about what should be done.
