I have an old typesetting block, from the days before computers did most of the printing.

I'm curious as to whether it is some official symbol of some branch of service.

It's shows a spread-wing eagle on top a globe, with North and South Amerca showing. In the back of globe is an anchor, with top and bottom peeking out from the globe.

Anyone know what this symbol is for?

That is the emblem for the US Marine Corps: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Marine_corps_flag.gif

Just FYI, the anchor is "fouled"... an anchor which has one or more turns of the chain (line) around it. The emblem derives from the emblem of the Royal Marines.

Here is the Flag / Emblem for the US Navy:

This is for office and parade use, a ship flies the National Flag, and (in port) the "Navy Jack" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Navy_Jack ) since 2002
