The ideal is a balancing act between sucking up and independent thinking. It's very easy to overstep the boundary between the two and come across as a pandering, obsequious ninny. I suspect God doesn't like fawning drivel any more than the rest of us. He probably goes around saying things like, "Get up off the ground, you mewling ninny!"

Our God is a just and moral God. God does not need to be praised, but people may be ably to, by doing this, reinforce the value they place in God within themselves. Others may have other ways to make sure they have a good connection to God and his value.
