I know not all of them are, I was just wondering why so many(not all but a large number) of the ones that use this site come across as rude and intolerant, almost dogmatic.

Where as ALL of the Atheists I have met face to face seem really quite pleasant and I often socialise with many of them.

Does this website make people more aggressive, or do people come here because is it a difficult issue for them?

I would have to ask if you bring religion up to them during the course of a day. We are funny, intelligent, great people who do not believe in gods. No one would know that I was an atheist in real life because I don't talk about religion. This is the religion and spirituality section so I talk about religion here. I don't think I'm insulting here, but I'm honest. I don't dance around the truth. Yes, I do think that anonymity makes you more apt to stand your ground and you can call that aggressive if you wish, but I think it's a great tool for getting across how we feel. I happen to believe that spouting your religion in my face and telling me that I'm wrong and will be going to hell insulting and aggressive. Nothing is more aggressive than a proselytizer.

An atheist could just as easily ask:
Why are theists that use this website generally more insulting than those I meet/know/work with day to day?

Although to be fair to the theists, it is usually some adherents of one particular brand of theism who seem to be doing most of the insulting. I don't think I need to point out specifically which one.

A few possibilities:

1. It is easy to hide behind a screen and a keyboard.

2. It is easy to be more aggressive in a forum where others are more aggressive.

3. Power in numbers.

4. Are the atheists here really more insulting or just more unsettling to you?

5. Suck it up.

Because the internet allows people to behave like assholes without facing the consequences. Plus the fact that the kind of people who go on the internet to discuss religion are more likely to hold extreme views.

This website is structured to bring out the worst in everyone. I know I'm sometimes insulting but then I find some of the questions and statements on here insulting.

It's just the way it is but it shouldn't be taken too seriously.

It's the anonymity of the internet.

However, I would say MOST of the atheists on here are very pleasant people.

The internet allows people a measure of anonymity.

Believe me, you will find rude people and trolls on message boards no matter what the subject is.

Most of us are pleasant people in real life. I think some of the "ruder" ones around here are venting a bit. It is hard to watch some much insanity in daily life and not have release somewhere.

I wholeheartedly apologise if my attempts to open your eyes to the reality of the universe have caused any offence.
