Cutting is an addiction, usually triggered by emotional reasons, like externalizing a painful or stressful event. I think that's why people put it under mental health.
It is also most common among people with mental health disorders, like depression and bipolar disorder.

Were this ten year ago,.. Yes, Diff... Serious problem.
Now? No. It's a "Jumping on the Band Wagon" problem. In the United States it is a normal thing now. There is no reasoning to it often except the persuit of popularity and being normal.
With how the United States works, this means it is a normal phase.
It's very sad because there are people with REAL problems with Cutting, so now they cannot get found or treated properly >.<
The average Citizen and Doctor in the United States thinks you are nuts if you believe people are allergic to Food Dye. And people are not allowed to be allergic to Fluoride because it's such a great thing to teeth they don't want to detor people from useing it (which is pretty sad because if you do the math it means alot of infants die "Mysteriously" that are actually allergic to everything being full of Fluoride,.. and no you are probably not allergic to it,.. but for some people it means Death and so you do the math when everything has it, even water and formula).
So the answer is both Yes & No :/ There are some people that have Mental Health problems that make them Cut but most people that Cut these days do it because it's popular.

Yes I would put cutting under a mental health disorder. I've done it before and have several scars to remember it by. I got help. Sometimes I still get the urge to do it especially when I'm in a lot of emotional distress. Cutting seems to help the emotional pain go away. It didn't hurt when I did it but it did later on. Get some help!

Yes and no. It's a behavior issue, which could be either a chemical problem or a horrible learned behavior. I think its a habit that is perpetuated by all the media attention, making it seem almost "in-style". Your mind should be able to change how you feel without the physical distraction, if not, you need to learn different coping skills. Is that a mental condition? Maybe not. But it certainly can be a symptom of one.BTW, someday when your older, you'll probably regret scarring your beautiful skin.

There is a fine line between mental health and physical health. Something is wrong with a person's brain when they cut themselves - that's a physical thing, not something they wake up one morning and "decide" to do.
You treat both body and mind, but I would label it as a mental health condition.

Not necessarily a disease. But an issue that you may want to do some soul searching about...YES! Not to say in all situations this is a disturbed person..I know about adrenalin and the fun effects. But this is scarring to your body and most of all you want to make sure there isn't something at the root of why you are doing it. I will say most of the time there is a reason hun...weather you are conscious of that or not. At least care enough to search a little in your self and make sure.

Self mutilation is not a mental disorder. It can be brought on however by a mental disorder. I myself burn and my gf is a cutter, she cut herself because of a mental disorder and other times because of being addicted to Cocaine. There are many reasons for self mutilation not just mental health. The reason it's catagorized as mental health is because people who haven't done it think you must be crazy to inflict such harm onto yourself. What little they know. Plain and simple fact, no psychologist/psychiatrist could ever know what causes self mutilation because they have never experience it themselves. There fore their theories on why it happens are misplaced due to that simple fact. I myself was a self mutilator because I have BPD and because I didn't let my emotions go I burned myself to let them out. So mine was caused by a mental disorder but I do know that not all are cause by it. I hope this helps you out. Plus if you'd like to talk to others like yourself I have left you a link to my group here on Yahoo. Good day.
