My mother was just admitted to the Hospital for chest pains and I live several hours away from her. I called the Hospital and they wouldn't tell me what was wrong with her or why she was there, just that she was alive and they were doing test.
She has an abusive boyfriend, and I tried to ask the nurse if it was trauma related and she wouldn't answer me, so I proceeded to tell her that the gentleman she was with has a history of abuse and she didn't seem like she really cared. Told me "Ok sir, have a nice day," and hung up.
What should I do?

With the new HIPPA laws they cant legally give you much information on the phone. I would make the drive to be with your mother. You can get the point across in person about the abusive boyfriend and the nurses will be happy to keep an eye on the situation while she is in the hospital.

Tell the doctor. They are supposed to report things like that, to the Police. But the doctor will have to see for himself if it is actually physical abuse that caused the problem. He should be able to tell. Especially if there are scars somewhere from the past. ---
Can you go to the hospital? If you can, please do so.
If the boyfriend is in the room, tell the nurse you must speak with the doctor, and don't leave the hospital until you are able to speak with him/her.
Try over the phone, if you can't go..
Good luck.
God, take care of this mother, and this situation.
Amen.

Call back and tell them you're inquiring about your mother. Since she's your mother they should give you information. Explain you live far away and can't get there or you would. If they won't give you information perhaps you can call her doctor or ask to speak to the nurses manager/supervisor.

Well try to go to the hospital directly. Hospitals may have policy of not to reveal patients details to strangers and especially over the phone they wont know who you are. Try to see the doctor consulting your mum and talk to him/her straight. As a son you have all the rights to know what's wrong with your mum.

call the boyfriend and ask him. Call your mom's cell phone (maybe he has it?) Or keep calling the hospital maybe you'll find a different nurse. Explain where you live and how scared you are...maybe she'll tell you more.
I hope your mother will be well soon.

Medical folks have their hands tied with privacy laws. Ask your Mom to authorize them to discuss her condition with you. Once they get her permission, they can tell you everything. So talk to her, or ask the nurse to ask if it is OK with her. Then you can get the information you need. You are worried, and being far way, you feel helpless. Try this to get the information that is needed.

I would get to the hospital ASAP. Don't waste time on the phone. Either that or call a relative and ask them to go now. Good luck. I hope she's ok.

HIPPA laws prevent them from releasing any medical information to you. You can either go yourself or hopefully there is another relative for friend nearby that can go and give you info. sorry for your situation, but at least you know the hospital she is at follows the law....i know, not much consolation...

Hospital have privacy policies that they have to enforce. Depending on you age, you may have to get an other relative to take you there. Makesure you bring identifications.
Good luck
