This procedure one always has to perform to disconnect external hardwares. I want to know if i am still using that device and icon from system tray get disappeared then how can I remove that particular device(for instance, pen drive or iPod)
Another thing, If that devices cannot get disconnected even after clicking on " Safe to remove hardware" (if some programs still use the drive) then putting computer on "Hibernate" or "Shut Down" the PC can solve the problem or not? I mean, Is that make the device to
remove safely?
And note I have read all the previous answers asked in yahoo! answers but there is no single effective answer.
All giving answers like go in properties, check "show the taskabar icon" and many other useless answers. But there is not a one effective answer

Re:
wll welcome for ur thanks and comments
Wll virus is not an issue that I think one is not aware of if one using computer and internet as well. The main motto to add this is to only that we cant remove the devices if they are in use as it is with files (when using not deleting , editing , renaming of files allowed)
and there is nothing serious if you remove the device without using safely remove hardware or as i suggested turn off the system also turn off the device so its same as unplugging the device without safely remove but in this case using of resourse is handled by (END NOW) before turning off the system (by default it is asked for any appn if it fails to terminate in winxp)
seeking more comments n read my answer thoroughly and rank it too

first of all i want to mention that there is no big issue for removing safely your pen drives and all if you know that u r not using any files on that however if u still want to remove go to task manager and check it out that wheter any process still running to examine your pen drive or any other device (some times process running on background dont let you know that they are using resources) it may be a virus attack as simple as sometimes floppy disk jammed when inserted to the disk drive......
so simply remove that device even i prefer to do immediately because it may be a virus (exe on your pen drive) and curropting your system :-(((
in the last plz rank my answer which encourage me to help and answer more
however shutting down the computer and rebooting in safe mode may help you for safely removing the device but interestingly i let u know basically why it is needed.........
basicaly any usb device get powered from that usb port only not with external plugs so when u turned off your system notice that the device power also gone and now if you asking that after rebooting the system (which also reboots your device) is a funny thing to do basicaly y we use safely remove the hardware is only to plug it off (nothing more).....

For Win XP, actually you are safe enough to just unplug any external devices without doing anything else.
However, in Win 2K, or you want to be safer in XP, you'd better stop the device using "Safely Remove Hardware", as you mentioned. The normal reason for not allowing you to remove it is that the device is currently used by some processes. Thus, a Restart and a Log Off will enable you to do that at most of the times, but not by Hibernate.
Hope this can help a little.

Most USB devices can just be unplugged as long as you're not in the middle of something. It's better to use the safely remove hardware but entirely necessary.
The icon from the system tray is not disappearing it's just hidden. The system tray will hide icons that haven't been used in a long time. Click the little arrow to the left of the system tray icons and it will show the rest of the icons. The "click to safely remove hardware" icon will be there.

There is an option in windows that determines if data is written right away to USB devices or whether it is cached and written later. The first type is sometimes referred to fast eject, since after the writing of data is done, you can easily unplug the device.
Found in the device manager, (control panel -- system -- hardware) for your removable device:
*Optimize for quick removal to disable write caching on the storage device and in Windows. This allows you to remove the device without using the Safely Remove Hardware application, but can have an impact on the performance of the device.
*Optimize for performance to enable write caching in Windows, which can improve the performance of the storage device. However, you must use the Safely Remove Hardware application to disconnect the device from the computer.

I find your question a tad confusing, so let me just say generally:
With USB external devices, it is best to click the icon to "safely remove" and wait to be told it is safe before removing that particular device.
To use it again, in the same session, just reinsert it.
Some - not all - external storage, if you read their literature, tells you not to leave the USB device plugged in - but to remove it at shutdown.
I have a couple USBs that I leave plugged in constantly. I have others that I use for transport. I have still another that I must remove at shutdown.
Generally speaking, if you plan to remove a USB device for transport, "safely remove" it first. I would not remove it while the PC is in hibernation or anything else.

properly, frankly, i might want to allow you to comprehend, as a rule, no longer something undesirable will happen in case you remove USB force with out secure remove hardware. Microsoft usually tells you to apply secure remove hardware at the same time as eliminating USB force to remove dropping information, yet in truth, we may be able to nonetheless disobey the 'rule' (I easily have performed that frequently rather at the same time as i'm in a hurry), and nonetheless were given no unfavorable effect, no information become lost as feared. So, that is secure to assert that even eliminating USB force with out utilizing secure remove hardware received't reason you to lose the information. yet as precautions, attempt to continually utilizing secure remove hardware function whenever you remove the force. you received't comprehend at the same time as undesirable issues happen, once you're out of luck, top?
