When you miss somebody, you remember and appreciate little things they did/do that you really never noticed before. You will have a whole new set of compliments you can pay that person when you talk to them or see them next as you realize these little things that otherwise you might have taken for granted.
Missing somebody gives you clarity about what is working and what isn't in the relationship, and may renew your commitment to try harder to make it work.
Missing somebody also makes you want to make every moment count; you realize that little piddly problems don't really matter and you don't want to waste a second on things that aren't important.
Missing somebody gives you something to look forward to when you see them again.

I usually sit down and write them a long sincere letter and if it os my girlfriend it would include some romantic interludes. If the person has passed on, I would try to remember all the good times we shared , the moments of joy and possibly shed a tear or two and tell them how much I missed them.

The best part about "missing" somebody is when this feeling is gone...

Time apart makes love stronger. The whole missing part is good to make you realize how much you love them and of course seeing them.

Missing someone is a good thing because when you are around them all the time you start to take them for granted. When you miss them you gain appreciation for them and their quirks and personality that you miss.

When you get to see them again. That is the best part ever - the excitement, the happiness, the smiles when you get to see their face and touch them...

you learn how much they mean to you
I disagree with those that say seeing them again because seeing them again is not part of missing the person is part of "seeing them again."
