We own 2 businesses. My husband's brother works for one of them. We have a secretary for them both. My husband saw that his brother charged a carton of cigarettes to an account and got all over him and questioned him about it. On another occasion, the secretary forgot to make a large deposit. In the meantime she wrote me a check. I deposited it and shortly after, it bounced and ended up costing me $500 out of my account. My husband did not tell her about my monetary loss but only told her checks bounced because she didn't make the deposit. Since then we have hired another secretary part time and my husband corrected the original secretary for studying at work when there was other work to be done. She now has had an attitude for a month because he corrected her and is jealous of the new secretary. Why would she act this way. Why would she think she should be treated special????

We didn't hire the new secretary as a result of the 1st secretary's performance. We hired her because the 1st secretary started going to school half days.

If your brother in law runs the other business, why is your husband correcting the secretary? Doesn't she work for him? Seems to me, both your brother in law and his secretary have gotten pretty comfortable, and don't appreciate all of the attention. I imagine the secretary's hostility stems from jealousy and resentment. Is she rather young -- and maybe very immature? Maybe even very attractive?

Sorry to answer your question with even more questions -- there is probably more to this story than the 1000 character limit allowed per question.

Put yourself in her shoes for a moment. You hired a new secretary. Unless she was part of the hiring process it is obviously a threat to her comfy job. Why does she think she should be treated special, we all want to be treated special.

I agree that training the other secretary to overtake some specific job duties would be in line.
If the original secretary keeps the attitude call her on it and then start the corrective action firing process.

Sounds like the first secretary is pouting because she cant do as she pleases any more. When someone gets away with things for a long time, they feel put out when they get caught and asked to do what should have been expected in the first place. Supervise her closely for awhile. When she gets constantly corrected, gets no pay increases and is only given the crummy projects to do, she will most likely quit.

The first secretary made a mistake - that happens. She should have apologized - and not have an attitude. Brothers should not be charging cigarettes to the business. That is illegal.

how long has she worked there and did her studies? and this was the first time an error happended? I can see her frustration!
if i only messed up one time...
however that one mess up cost the company 500 bucks maybe you could tell her sence it was her error that she can conitniute to do her studies if she pays for her errors next time!
Why your paying someone else seems like you may replace someone when she did that same job while studying i'm sure she feels replaced!
i would talk to her again and explain the issue!
but then again your into your business to make money not to make friends!
you did good!

she feels like she was there first and should be treated special because of it.
she's also been cought not doing her job which is why she's acting out. (like a child does)

if she needs more time for homework or studying then drop her hours down to something like 10 hours a week so she can concentrate on her studies.

i would cut her hours and start trainign the other receptionist for more responsibilities. obv she has other thigns distracting her from fufilling her job completely and competently. maybe she needs to be told what the result of her lazy actions cost you both time and money and if ses going to have an attitude than maybe this isnt the right place for her to be working at.

Talk to her about her attitude now, before it continues to fester. Ask her directly and with a kind tone of voice if she is happy working there. Then explain. It is best if you do so with your husband and present a united front.

She sounds like she just doesn't care about her job. If I were you I would cut her schedule down to maybe one day a week and maybe she will move on.
