I work with a guy who explains Rahab couldn't be a prostitute because the Jewish spies would not have asked for help.

Isn't redemption through trusting God part of the story of Jericho?

Yes she was. (See Joshua 2:1, 6:17, 6:22 & 6:25. Also see Hebrews 11:13 and James 2:25 at Bible.com)

Mary of Magdala was also a prostitute. And God told His prophet Hosea (Hosea 1:2) to "Go and marry a prostitute with children born by prostitution," as a symbol of how Isreal prostituting itself with other "gods".

It just shows what Jesus can do with a life completely surrendered to Him! :-)

And for the second part of your question: Yes, absolutely! Trusting God sometimes puts a true Christian in strange places. (Can you imagine how silly the soldiers felt marching around the city of Jericho doing nothing!? LOL!) When He is in control though, you are at the right place at the right time--just as the Jewish spies were.

The pharisees & Bible scholors of the time didn't like Jesus because he ran around with "sinners" aka prostitutes and tax collectors. He came to seek and to save those who are lost.

Joshua 2
Rahab and the Spies
1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. "Go, look over the land," he said, "especially Jericho." So they went and entered the house of a prostitute [a] named Rahab and stayed there.
2 The king of Jericho was told, "Look! Some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land." 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: "Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land."

Harlot was a name given to someone who managed an Inn, or Tavern. Please note that she hid the spies under the "stalks of flax" which was drying upon the roof. From this clothes were made, something not conducive to a prostitute. And yes redemption through trusting in God is part of the story here.Rahab sold her entire kingdom to be with the people of God.Note that she had been anticipating their arrival. She wanted the Hebrew God to be her Lord before she knew the spies.

Jos 2:10 For {we have heard} how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

Jos 2:11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he [is] God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

Jos 2:12a Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD ........."

Here in this verse we see her reward.Rahab becomes part of the lineage of Christ our Lord.Mother of Booz, Great Grandmother to King David.
Matthew 1:5 And Salmon begat Booz of {Rachab}; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

She was indeed a prostitute, the story says so (some Bibles say "harlot"--same thing), and when her story is recapped in the New Testament by Paul, he mentions the fact that she was a prostitute and yet God chose to work through her to save his people.

Just goes to show you we're all valuable, no matter what our lives look like from the outside.

The Bible called her a harlot, so she was a harlot! The spies went where God led them, even if it was a prostitute's house.

Rahab operated an inn. If she provided her guests with special favors, what difference does it make. Rahab and the Jews had common enemies.

Yes she was. She hid the men sent from harm. She placed a red string in the window representing the blood of Jesus. Therefore sparing her life. Mary was a desendant of Rahab. Thus being the mother of Jesus Christ..
