Or even just as a Linux PC? Can it be configured to work as a media center and do Tivo like stuff for me?

Can I use it to play EverQuest or other PC based games?

There is no Windows version available for the PowerPC platform that is the PS3. The PS3 can be used as a Linux PC but not Windows. You could in theory use the PS3 as a Tivo like device or media center device with Linux, but you'd need an external TV Tuner for it. As far as playing Everquest or PC based games, as long as their Linux based yes you would be able to play those, not games for windows platforms though.

You can install Windows over Linux OS (you'll have to install Linux first), but:
1). It's complicated to install Windows.
2). DirectX won't be supported - you won't be able to play games.
3). Windows over Linux is really, really unstable.
4). Drivers issues.

However, you can use Linux Yellow Dog, Red Hat, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, etc. You can't play serious games, but this'll give a lot of other capabilities.
