The same "artist" who made an anatomically correct, nude Jesus out of chocolate is back with a scratch n sniff Virgin Mary. We have had a cross in a cup of urine labeled art. Many other disgusting and disgraceful depictions mocking Christianity.
My question is: Is it time for Christians to stand up against this type of thing? I am not talking about standing like Muslims and killing/calling for the killing of people over it, but what about protests, boycotts, etc. Or is this like banning a book, and only makes the book (or in this case "art") more popular?

You are probably right about drawing attention to them. I would, however, like to see the same uproar over this in the media as you would if it were anti-ANY OTHER RELIGION. It never ceases to amaze me how anti-Christian the main stream media bias is.

Artists showing disrespect to God
Artists painters have some brain to put their imagination on canvas. When they have bent mind they depict same on Canvas if Bright brain works, it will be good art. If Dark brain works it will depict bad art as you said about Jesus and Marry. Even in India one artist has done such blunder about Hindu GodsGodesses. Some one in Holland or Netherlands, made cartoon of Prophet
Some Crazy minds do some mischief to draw public attentions and create sensation. But it dies soon. And masses are as usual at their worship and prayer or whatever it is. Only politicians and Orthodox will try to derive the political mileage. Religion has nothing to do with such aberrations let us not give much time and energy to such people

I wonder if we could sue someone for mockery religion and beliefs. I don't mean mockery in jokes coming from friends and people we know, or even those here in Y!A. I am talking about any manifestation through artists, politics, writers. To a certain point it is offensive, aggressive and disrespectful.
Let me tell this story. I am from Brazil and about ten years ago, a Christian pastor in Brazil, kicked an image of Virgin Mary in a Christian TV show. That pastor was criticized by media, politics and public who really were offended. Just for you to understand, Brazil is a catholic country and the Virgin Mary is the patron of the country. Can you imagine the scandal and all the pressure the pastor had to face, and the religion, and the TV who host the show?
Long short story, he was sued, the TV was sued, a representative of the show apologized publicly and the pastor was forced to leave Brazil, because even his safety was being threatened after all the turmoil.
I don't mean we should do the same, but we should do something... However, you know and I know that they will have the pay back coming from higher...
Peace!

While I personally don't have much interest in this type of art... well, not the "P*ss on Ch***" (sorry - that is what the urine cup piece is called... and I do recognize how taht is VERY offensive to Christians), I think telling people what they can and cannot express is very dangerous.
I'm not sure why the nude Jesus is so offensive, personally. Nudity is very natural and the human form is beautiful, so I don't get why that should be upsetting unless the artist used to tootsie pop or something, it is just making Jesus human.
As for the scratch & sniff thing, I guess the offense value in that is fascinating in and of itself. I mean, visually, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong... or is there? So the controversy lies purely in what scent is ascribed to the Virgin. THAT is brilliant, IMHO. I mean, really, when has the smell of beautiful art ever been cause for protest? So if the Mary smells like roses - as many who claim they have seen her apparition suggest - is it still offensive? Or only if it smells like sex or excrement or something. And what if it smells like peppermint or sage? Art is meant to be thought provolking, and I think that one is, of the three, the most thought provolking.

I used to be in a band. The one time we provoked people into protesting us was one of the best nights we had. It got written up in the East Coast Rocker and everything. It was more publicity than you could imagine. Our production company was happy, not mad.
You're best bet if you want to stop it from making money is ignore it. As long as there is money in it, it will be there.
Added: I'd pay to see that. Before you mentioned it, I hadn't heard. Think about it.

Yes. Stop the persecutation and the mockery. Have you seen what people are doing to sister Britney Spears, a good Southern Baptist girl? Have you seen what they are doing to Richard Roberts, the brother from Oral Roberts University.
It's just wrong. Leave our people alone!
