This is the first time for me. I've always worn dresses and skirts, but have never real been the "girly-girl" type - so I don't really have a clue.
I got this dress for the Marine Ball I am attending with my Marine, but I don't know if it suits the 'code.' He mentioned something about it being long gowns (which don't really compliment my figure). I looked it up and saw conflicting responses...
This is the dress I already got, it is knee-length...any thoughts/opinions on it? I can always return it...

I love the dress. But as others have said, it depends on how formal the ball is set to be. From my experience most wear long gowns. If your marine feels you need a longer dress, I would go with what he says.

But very cute dress none the less.

First of all, I love the dress. The most important consideration is local custom for your ball. I found this site with protocol for the ball and recommendations for attire, but it MAY vary by location.

Mentor Guidelines Section 2 The Corps
The Birthday Ball is one of the more important Marine Corps
traditions you are able to take part in. It is one of the social
highlights of the year and a great time to enjoy the fellowship
and camaraderie of the Marine Corps.
November 10, 1775 - The birthday of the United States Marine
Corps. It is celebrated annually wherever Marines are serving,
whether in a cold tent at a remote location or the finest hotel in
the grandest city. On this day, greetings of “Happy Birthday,
Marine” are exchanged and large numbers of Marines and their
spouses or guests attend Birthday Balls all over the world. Some
are formal dinners followed by dancing. Some are dances with
refreshments. All, however, include the formal Marine Corps
Birthday Cake Cutting Ceremony. Approximately 10 minutes
before the ceremony begins, everyone must be in their seat. The
bar will close and remain closed until after the ceremony.
“Attention” is sounded. At this time, everyone will rise.
Conversation should stop, cigarettes are extinguished and drinks
are left on the table. This is important to know, because YOU as
well as your Marine are expected to show respect during the
ceremony. The narrator will read General Lejeune’s message and
the Commandant’s message. The Guest of Honor will offer
his/her remarks. Following the speeches, the cake is cut. The first
piece of cake is given to the guest of honor. The second is
presented to the oldest Marine present representing the wisdom
and experience of those who have served. The third piece of cake
is presented to the youngest Marine by the oldest, signifying the
passing on of knowledge and leadership from the old to the new.
At the close of the ceremony, the Marine’s Hymn is played. You
should always stand straight and remain silent until the last note
has sounded. Once the ceremony and speeches are concluded,
the remainder of the night is social. Relax and enjoy yourself! (Pg. 10)

Formal -- long or short formal dress for women; dress
uniform or tuxedo for men. The Birthday Ball, Mess
Night and Dining In are formal events. (Pg. 12)

that is a really pretty dress, but no i do not think it is appropriate. i have been to a USMC ball and have seen many pictures of others, and plan on going again this year. I wore a red, strapless, floor-length ball gown from davids bridal and it was a good choice. it looked great and matched other's dresses. think about how fancy the Marine's blues are, that dress wouldnt match. sorry, just trying to help. heres a link to what my dress pretty-much looked liked, they dont sell that same style anymore

There are different Marine Corps Balls held all over the world. I am not sure how formal yours is. They do vary a little although all are at least semi-formal. Talk to some of the wives and girlfriends that have gone to this ball in the past. I am sure there are pictures of last years ball. I think the dress looks great but you would not want to be the only one in a semi-formal dress.

Semper Fi!

Very pretty for a cocktail party/semi-formal event but not appropriate for a ball.

In the military especially formal MEANS formal! Long gown, updo's, even gloves if you like. He will be in dress blues most likely and you want to compliment him. I'm not sure what you mean they don't compliment your figure there are all kinds out there - the popular slip dresses don't really compliment anyone but super models! Check Chadwicks, Penny's,Dillard's (great if they are on sale!) and others.

For the formal ball its not dressy enough it should be floor length or at least t-length. Normally you can find this out thru the Marine or maybe another friend who has been before.

It's fine. I have been to many Marine Corps Balls and last time my girlfriend wore something similar. Many of the girls there did too. It doesn't have to be a long gown. Enjoy yourself. It should be a good time.

Too short,other wise it's fine.
Your Marine is responsible for your behavior at the ball so be extra nice and lady like ,Ok.

Technically, it is not formal enough, but there will be others there wearing similar styles and lengths. Minimum length is tea( calf or below) really.

But please, if you have tattoos on your shoulders or upper back, DO NOT WEAR sleeveless! put a wrap on or something. two young ladies wore spaghetti straps at the Navy Ball last weekend, and they each had tattoos that totally distracted from the outfit and made them look trashy. One girl had TWO on her collarbones and it just looked horrid.

I think the dress is very nice and classy. I dont see where it would be a problem unless a Marine wife thinks you look better then she does and starts crap. Not all Marine wives are like this but-hey, women are women--and i am a woman!!!!!! I think the dress will be great!
