I have tried giving their food different names, liek trees for broccoli, and mountains for mashed potato, etc, and it worked for a few weeks but now... Anyway, I have tried making them sit there till it is eaten and they just won't do it, I don't want to keep feeling like a big meanie, I tried offering a reward for a finished meal, like a bowl of ice-cream but that doesn't work either. I cook different meals, the same meals etc but nothing seems to work. I cook exactly the same meals as my mother did when we lived with her, but my girls just wont eat it, and yet my food tastes the same sometimes better. I am getting so sick of throwing it all in the garbage, someone help Please!!!

ok so I tried the hard approach, by saying no not until u start eating your dinner, and for the record they love mashed potato, about the only thing they will eat, ur probably right about small protions, I come from a big famiyl so I guess I tend to make too much. I try lots of different foods, fun foods etc, it just seems they are not interested (or they heard their uncle stirring me about being a bad cook) but he was only joking. I dunno, they eat the same foods at my sisters place when we stay for tea as well as at their grandparents house. and my food tastes exactly the same, otherwise I would not eat it

New rules. You will cook what is a good meal, they will eat what is put in front of them, at least one tablespoon of what ever you serve. If there plate is not finished they will not get seconds on the foods they like. After supper there will be no snacks if the meal wasn't eaten, There will be no snacks before supper to dampen the appitite when they finally realize you are not messing around they will change their minds. Let Them know according to the law, you only have to feed them a few spoons of food a DAY, not each meal. So if they ate at school, that is good enough.

How old are your kids?? My 3 year old son goes in spurts with his eating. Sometimes he eats 2 helpings of something I cook and then the next time, he hardly touches it. If I've noticed a decrease in his eating, I tend to make a game out of it. We'll sit together and I'll say something like "You can't take a bite of your carrots. Nope I don't think you can." Then he takes a bite. This technique has always worked on him! I have found that getting upset over stuff doesn't work in my house. I just go with the flow. If you get upset and they see that, they may just be doing it to get a rise out of you. Good Luck! Remember, this could just be a phase you kids are going through.

I don't think anything is failsafe but here is something that worked for us. Fix your children's plates and put ridiculously small portions of each thing. They have to eat each bite and then they can either not eat anything else or have as much as they want of anything else on the table. Be firm that this is the last food of the day, if they're hungry at bed time, oh well. Sometimes kids need to taste foods over and over and over again before they start to like them.

The best way we have found is simply to let our son eat when he's hungry, and not force him to eat a certain amount at the same times each day. I love sitting down for a family meal every night, but maybe my son is too young for that kind of strict regularity - after all, he's growing and I'm not.
(That's not to say we let him go off and play while we're all supposed to be sitting at the table!)
Another good way we have found is to let our son help with the cooking and serving. Any little old thing - like simply stirring the pot - makes him feel like he made it himself!

Ask them what they like, talk to them.
Make more kid friendly meals. There are some new things out there that are very healthy but more appealing to kids now days. Some things might cost a little more but at least you won't be throwing it away and they will eat.
Here is a link so you can get some new ideas. http://www.kidapprovedmeals.com/
This one sounds yummy! http://www.robinsweb.com/food/kids_menu.html
Even a bowl of vitamin packed cereal would be less stress on you and them and they probably wouldn't even argue.

Maybe you could make it colorful. Like if you have something you can make a smiley face in the food. Get artistic. Maybe use food coloring for the mashed potatoes. you could do a rainbow of mashed potatoes and other foods as well.

Fix them small portions. Don't overload their plate. Let them know that is what they are expected to eat. If they don't then don't allow snacks between meals. When they ask for something then explain to them that when they start eating their dinner/lunch/etc they will be allowed treats or snacks but until then they cannot. Hope this works.

No offense but maybe they're tired of your cooking. Make soy bean burgers or something. I sure didn't like eating mashed potatoes and broccoli when I was little, it was so tasteless.

No help, I have no children yet. Nor husband or boyfriend. Maybe next year. Maybe not. So far I have had no interest in making a family. or babies for that matter.
