This is my cut and paste answer. The reason for that is because a tech info is a tech info, you can't beat it.
PS3 will win the console war, no doubt. Xbox 360 and Wii are so weak from technological point of view, that in couple of years they won't be capable of dealing with serious graphics. GTA IV, for instance, isn't even announced for Wii - this toy won't be able to cope with the game's requirements. Xbox 360 is getting GTA IV, however, the game is going to be released on several DVDs - Xbox 360 owners will have to interrupt gaming process and switch discs (Rockstar complained about this issue). Only PS3 will have it on single BD-DVD.
Let's compare PS3 and XBOX 360:
A third of XBOX 360 (33%) are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only around 0.2%.
PS3 has 8 (7+1) kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3.
PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 54 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular dual layer DVD-9 (8.5GB). It's possible to get HD-DVD (max. - 30GB) for 360, but it'll cost you around 180$, in this case Xbox is going to be MUCH more expensive, than PS3.
Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second
Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second
PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in 4 slots card reader (except 20GB and 40GB versions), ability to use printer and so on.
Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.
PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers
Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers
PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)
Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 100 $
Graphics are stronger in PS3, due to RSX chip, that was developed by Nvidia exclusively for PS3. To estimate its power (roughly) - take 6800 Ultra nvidia graphics card, multiply it by 2 - get a result, still PS3 stronger, because 6800 Ultra runs on 400 Mhz and RSX runs on 550 Mhz.
PS3 uses technology from AGEIA company. It does to physics of the game same thing GPU (videocard processor) does to graphics. This thing is on sale for PC(special card). The price is around 350$. There is no such thing in 360.
Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of death" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 8 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it. That's why in some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".
Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is an uninventive nerd (as usual).
When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.
In 2008 PS3 will get more than 300 games, including Metal Gear Solid 4, The Agent and other great exclusives. Here is the good link to the future PS3 releases. http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html......
PS3 online is free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.
There were reports, that 360 scratches discs. No reports on that in PS3.
The funniest thing, that right now there are no games for PS3, that show full potential of the console. Biggest games weigh only 25 GB (Xbox 360 will need more than 3 discs even for those).
On PS3 you can install other OS, such as Linux Yellow Dog, Ubuntu and others. Sony officially lets you do it. There is no such thing in 360.
PS3 HDD can be replaced easily with any 2.5" SATA 5400 RPM HDD (used in laptops). 250 GB will cost you around 170$. In 360 you have to buy exclusive HDD, where 20GB will cost you 100$.
Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years. Also Sony reduces price now. Soon there is going to be cheaper 40GB version of PS3.
Sony constantly upgrades PS3 software (free updates for OS) - you get new functions and improvements.
PS3 controller (sixaxis) has a motion control - you move controller - game responds. Wii has it, Xbox 360 - doesn't. PS3 controller is getting vibrocontroller soon (Dualshock 3).
On PS3 you can help sick people by running Folding Home project. Wii and Xbox 360 didn't even think about it.
New 40GB is coming with a lower prive between around 400$ and 400 euros (depends on the region).
I didn't mention Wii, because it's so weak, no point to talk about it. Leave it for kindergarten and casual games.

The PS3 is worth the extra money simply by the fact that it comes with a bunch more, its more of a complete package. I just paid a ton of money to make my Xbox 360 do all the things my PS3 can do right out of the box.
Since I've owned a 360 (one month), I've found that Micro$oft has been "nickel and dime"ing me for every little feature. Wireless adapter, rechargable controllers, online gameplay. I've easily spent over $700 for it whereas, I haven't had to go outside my original $600 for my PS3 yet and I bought it last December.
There are lots of Army/Combat games for both systems, you can go either way there. The 'right now' purchase is the 360, but the 'long run' purchase is the PS3. Plus, the 360 has a killer failure rate right now, and the last thing you want to have to do is send it in for repairs.
The Xbox section of Y! Answers is filled every single day with people asking what to do with their broken 360s. You don't see that stuff for the PS3 or the Wii.

The PS3 has tons of games coming, most gaming websites are stating that there are over 300 games in the queue for release on the PS3 within the next 6-12 months.
The 360 does currently have tons of games available, not all of them are good army/combat games. Some are dumb games like Viva Pinata.
Take a look at the combat/army games coming to the consoles within the next 6 months, every game coming to the 360 is coming to the PS3, that's army/combat related.
Couple of other things to consider, failure rate, the failure rate for the 360 is somewhere around 35%. Failure rate for the PS3 is somewhere around 1%.
PS3 has a blu-ray player built-in to watch hi-def movies on, and may be something to consider, as it is an added technology to your home theater.

I own both systems (PS3 & Xbox 360), and to be completely honest with you, I would LOVE to recommend the 360 because of all the FPS (First Person Shooter) games available for it, but I would be recommending something that's not very RELIABLE. I'm already on my THIRD (3rd) 360 because I've had so many software and hardware problems with it. Take a look at some of the links bellow and you'll see why I'm saying this:
XBOX TECHNICAL PROBLEMS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_technical_problems
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,288313,00.html?sPage=fnc.technology/videogaming

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,134144-pg,1/article.html
On the other hand, my PS3 has been running strong since day one with NO PROBLEMS at ALL.
Another thing about the 360 is that it gets VERY HOT and it's also VERY NOISY. There's even a website dedicated to helping 360 owners how to fix the Heat Sink once the warranty runs out:
XBOX HEAT SINK REPAIR GUIDE
http://rbjtech.bulldoghome.com/pages/rbjtech_bulldoghome_com/XClamp.htm
As for the games, the PS3 hasn't even been out a full year yet and there are plenty of game on the way:
PS3 EXCLUSIVE TITLES
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS3_exclusives
PS3 ALL TITLES
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3_games
In terms of reliability, again, the PS3 wins hands down:

http://digg.com/playstation_3/Store_managers_detail_PS3_failure_rate_at_less_than_1
I know a lot of people who own Xbox 360s are going to tell you a bunch of stuff about it having more games, being cheaper and that the online experience is great, but as an owner of both systems my recommendation would be to go with the PS3.
If you want to buy your husband a Christmas gift that he will REALLY like than go out and get him a PS3... trust me.
HOPE THIS HELPS. GOOD LUCK!

One one thing seperates the two; More games on xbox 360 to date,... way more games, i'm sure playstation 3 will catch up,also you have the blue ray on the playstation 3.
So short term advantage 2 or 3 years x box by volume or great games to play on the system. Long term advantage the Playstation 3 if(and this is a 50% chance if) blue ray becomes the next VHS like formatt for video , unless
microsoft lower the price of the HD drive for x box 360 that you need to purchase as an extra to play these crystal clear movies.
Personally I think dvd is as good as you get on your quality of
picture, only thing possible advantage with these new formats
is if they were transportable via the next to a blue ray or Hd disc burner to own your own legal copy at a qtr of high street prices..lot of work to do on this side of the business though...
ok I went into a geek rant but stick with x box 360 for now

PS3 is $499 and the Xbox 360 Elite is $479. $20 dollar difference...
PS3 games produced are on Hd 50gig blueray (more space for better graphics without sacrificing game levels and game size..) GTA4 developers even stated that the game will have better graphics and gaming on the ps3 version and are having issues with the 360 version because of 8gig dvd game format... They may have to make the 360 version on multiple disc so if you like getting out of your chair alot while playing, .....
360-elite games produced on dual layered 8gig dvds
game developers are finding the 360 format to limiting and finding that they have to sacrifice game graphics or gaming levels and challenges...
Ps3 for the extra $20 you get a full HD entertainment system that also surfs the internet. You can goto any website and watch or download videos like YouTube...You can access your email and print it etcc...
Ps3 Blueray hd movie player that also upscales regular dvds movies to HD...It also upscales ps2 games to hd..
Ps3 comes with rechargeable controllers...
Ps3 comes with free online play and Wifi
All of the above the 360-elite can't do.
360 and elite -For hd movies you have to buy the hddvd player for $200. For
360 elite for quick charge kit you have to buy it for $20.
To play online the 360 charges $50 a year
360 elite no interent browser
Ps3 hdmi 1.3 (supports deep color)
360-elite- 1.2 doesn't support deepcolor 1.3
Ps3 Nvidia RSX GPU Graphics at least two years ahead of it's time. And programmers aren't even close to using it's full potential yet.
360-elite is hardware locked into outdated DX9 graphics-Game programmers are developoing for DX10 (full 4d and 3d motion realism)
THe ps3 8cell broadband processors. CPU-Designed specifically for highspeed calculations (Games Capable of more AI charactors )
Xbox 360 -Elite-- The New 65NM CHip....Isn't any different then what they used in the 360 core except it cost less to produce....
Ps3 you can buy any external usb harddrive and hook it up loaded with music videos , etc...You can buy any brand 2.5 ata harddrive and upgrade the harddrive size for ps3...
THe elite and 360 requires Microsoft harddrives only- for a 20gig it's $100, for the 120 it's $189
360 -elite for wifi you have to pay an additional $100 and online gaming is $50 a year...And for that $50 a year to play online you also get stuck with third party in menu advertising...
To use 60% of what the 360 and elite can do you have to buy the addons and you'll spend over $750 before you even insert a game.
THe elite and new 360s hdmi, 65nm, red ring of death--Microsoft has no Idea what the cause is, You can't fix what you can't find. So yes they are all vulnerable.
Get the ps3 you can use it for so much more. We own all three. THe wii, elite and ps3

PS3 is a complete package. The technology it is using will last for at least 6-8 years. It has Blu-ray palyer (next gen movies),
playing online with ps3 games is free, whereas in xbox you have to pay. Xbox 360 will not be able to play games at their best graphics within 2 years, and for xbox u will get confused when buying, whether to buy with or without hdmi. In PS3 everything is complete - u have built in wifi as well. Browse your internet. watch youtube. connectdifferent types of cards (mmc, sd, memory stick etc.)
if u want a console for a year only then think of xbox360.
if u want a console for more than 5 years buy PS3.
and now the price difference isnt much, as PS3 recently slashed their prices.
and in ps3 u surely have medal of honor

well absolutely hate xbox 360 and ps3. i would buy a wii
but if you have to buy one of those buy an xbox 360.
ps3 is a complete pile of Cr*p. i have played on one and they are not as good as people make out. the price is too high for what it is and the games are just rubbish. the only good thing is the graphics. i would rate it 2/10
now i don't like xbox 360 either but at least its got a good online market, decent games and good graphics. the price is still too high but its less of a rip off than a ps3. i would rate xbox 360 6/10.
so i think xbox 360 is the right choice for you, but i personally would choose a Nintendo wii.

The 360 is full of great games right now, he'll like it. Just be sure to buy a warranty also, they're notorious for breaking.
The PS3 just has potential, and lacking good games.
