Faith is a tough thing--no matter how much you want to have it, if you don't; you don't.
I could say that the world would be a nicer place if Santa Claus were real, and so decide that I wanted to have faith in that, but no matter how much I tried, I wouldn't be able to bring myself to believe it. So how could God hold us responsible for something we have absolutely no control over? Why would he give us critical thinking abilities and then make his main requirement that we set them aside in order to please him?

Faith does not necessarily have to be aimed at a god.
And you can choose whichever god(ess) you like. At least Mary Poppins cleans the house and looks after people.
There's nothing wrong with sarcasm, it's the sincerest form of non-flattery.

You can have faith in a turnip, but is it going to
improve you, change you, make you think,
make you a better person, neighbor, husband or
wife, mother/father, etc.
When you die, if you believe you have a soul..
will your faith take you to a place of peace?
Does it give respect to the creator?
If not, whats the point to have faith?

To try to answer your question, if you really believe someone that is presented to you as a fictional character actually exists, you are a bit daft. When it comes to God, however, God was not presented as a fictional character.

If I went around telling people that Superman would return to solve all of our problems one day, but nobody knew the day or hour, I would be dragged kicking and screaming into a psychiatrist's office.
Think about it.
