Depends which Sigma lens you are talking about. Not every lens a manufacturer makes is a "winner" when compared to other brands in the same particular focal length. Each mfr. has some klunkers or overpriced lenses where other mfrs are better values.

i use sigma 8 hours a day five days a week and have never had a problem with them. the only caution is to buy one with a really long range like 28 - 300. they tend to be a bit soft in my opinion and hard to use at 300mm hand held

don't waste your money on a canon or nikon brand lens as you will really struggle to tell the difference unless you have 29 years as a pro...

Sigma (aka Stigma) lenses are generally cheaply built and fall apart fast when seriously used. Optically they are average with high level of sharpness and good colour contrast and saturation. Not as good as a real Nikkor Telephoto lens but nowhere near the cost either. The Sigma clutches tend to fry in their lenses after a couple of years of professional use and the finish is not good.

I have a sigma 400 which I like ok. I just don't use it anymore. I was in a car wreck and can't carry the weight of it. I keep meaning to ebay the thing. I must admit, I liked it better on the film camera than on the digital.

Sigma lenses were never created for digital use. Actually most all the lenses on the market were never made for digital use. Nevertheless, without getting into micron units and resolving power of the optics, I would say STAY AWAY FROM SIGMA! If you have a Nikon stick to Nikon lenses, you will never regret it.

Some are and some are not. Best thing to do is to do a search for reviews on the spedific lens you are wanting and see if it meets your needs.

Excellent. Never seen a bad review. Why pay for marque lenses?

No.

Asker didn't ask about ZOOM lenses, phil20671.

They are fine with Sigma cameras, more than likely.
