Gospel being translatied as Good news.
I now know it to mean " repent of the dead works of the law and believe the good news of Jesus Christ"

they were so indoctrinated to sacrifice and it taking away their sin

Juhn was holding them accountable for sin and introducing Jesus to them as the end of the law and beginning of grace.

John 1:29
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

If the Jews were living accordingly, John would not have asked them to repent.
The goodnews that Jesus proclaimed was not in conformity with the teachings of the priests of that time and as such it could not liberate the Jews by showing them the right way to the kingdom of heaven.
