is sb400 good enough for d40? i kinda at budge will improve all flash shot made indoor? what about outdoor? is it true i had to cover with something to make it work best? if i attach sb400 in the came, does it auto detect it?

The SB400 is one of the flash units recommended by Nikon for the D40. I suggest you carefully read and study the "Using Flash" section in the Owner's Manual for your camera. Then, after you buy the flash, carefully read and study it.

I think (could be wrong) that if you have the camera in Auto and attach the flash when you turn the flash on it will set the correct shutter speed. The camera, using the TTL (off-sensor flash metering) will control flash duration.
