Take a couple of wire hangers (plastic coated would be best) and fabricate a little stand for the cat food bowl so that it's off the ground. The slugs won't be able to get to it and hopefully not smell it if it's about 6-8 inches off the ground.

Hi
cut fizzy drinks bottles in half and sink it into the garden with the top aligned with the ground, put a little bit of beer in the bottom. the slugs will fall in as they will be attracted to the beer. They will drown and you can empty the and resuse the trap again.
I have used this trick for years and it works a treat as it is much safer than slug pellets.

Keep the cat inside, never let it out, i have two that are both over 20 years in human years and are very happy to be inside. the problem today is cats cause more harm to neighbour and themselves when they are out at night or during the day, we just had a kitten killed by a car when a child put it down getting on a school bus the kitten ran home and was hit by a car right in front of the child, when will people learn these animals are not wild they are just babies and should be left inside.

Place a ring of salt around the food bowl. They will not go through the salt. When it wears away or the cat breaks the ring, add more. It will be best if you put it at the base of the food bowl and make it a thick ring.

Yes, a ring of salt around the bowl would be a lot less messy than putting the bowl in a pan of beer.

Salt, or a small cup of beer, set in the ground. They fall in the beer & drown. All the garden books recommend this one.
