Love is just an emotion and a chemical reaction in the brain.
However, (genuine) love makes people feel good and safeguards the world.
Therefore to say God is love is OK. However, the emphasis must be placed on the "love" and not on the "God".
God without love is a dead and harmful thing. God with love is a beautiful and good thing. Love without God is also a beautiful and good thing.
Love is good. Love protects. Love brings happiness. Love is inner harmony. Love is every being's true nature and purpose.

Love is not an emotion as such, contrary to what people think. Its a part-manifestation of the Soul. Emotions are felt in the stomach. If your ego gets hurt, its your stomach that feels bad. Love is centred in the heart. If somebody you love dumps you, if feeles like a knife in your chest.
Its love that stimulates the production of chemical stuff and hormones, NOT the other way round.
God's love is nowhere near the same as human love in any case. Its a geatly superior aspect/concept

A person caring for an AIDS patient, bringing a set of six abandoned kids into a home of their own, adopting a baby addicted to crack or has fetal alcohol syndrome, supporting the education of an impoverished child in a foreign land, visiting the sick and imprisoned, pledging to a food bank, soup kitchen, or other charity, reaching out and shaking the hand of that homeless man on the street and offering to buy him a meal, and etc, etc and etc...being a friend to someone who has no family or friends because of being abandoned due to illness or disfigurement, sponsering a single mothers child to go to camp cuz she can't afford it...these are acts of love and this is the love that God directs us toward. Just as He loves and strives with us every day, sending comfort and blessings and sharing all He has, giving us even just the beauty of the day and yet so much more...allowing us to live after all we do to each other...This is love. Not that warm fuzzy feeling a person can have when attached to something or someone "loveable". Yes, God is love. His kind of love is powerful, vibrant and selfless...even if you were a wart ridden, smelly wino beggar on the street who hadn't seen a bar of soap in months, had just puked on yourself and peed down your own leg, slept on cardboard boxes pulled from a dumpster, Jesus would hunker down and look you in the eye, face to face, smile and embrace you. Thats love. Could you do that for someone? With Him...all things are possible. Love in Christ, ~J~

God is love... It is written throughout the Bible... In fact he LOVES to laugh at human suffering! Why do you think that he created a sulfuric burning Hell to torment for ever and ever the vast majority of the human race that he LOVES so much?
Job 9:23 (NIV) When a scourge brings sudden death, he mocks the despair of the innocent.
Job 17:6 (NIV) "God has made me a byword to everyone, a man in whose face people spit.
God endorses every word that Job says..
Job 42:7 (NIV) After the LORD had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.
Job 42:11 (KJV) Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over ALL THE EVIL that the LORD had brought upon him:

God manifests Itself in such ways that even those who choose to explain Him away can still enjoy His bounty. Just a chemical reaction? I have read the text book as well but why certain chemicals react to others is still a mystery.
