People should respect life--human, pet, life in general. That is not earned by the deeds of the other living being it is given simply because it is a living being.

I think everyone should be respected until they choose to behave in a manner that causes the loss of respect. At that point, a person would need to earn respect.

We all have to earn respect. It's not a "I'will if you will" option. How you treat others matters as to how you will be treated however, it doesn't mean they have to respect you. It takes time to show people why you deserve respect. Respecting yourself is good first step.

Dave said it well. I respect every single person I meet. I value everyone I see. If they prove me wrong and they don't deserve to be respected, fine, they no longer get respect. If they want it back, they earn it over time.

Everyone should respect everyone, until that respect is lost.
You get my respect, but you have to keep it, that's where the "earning" part comes in.

People receive respect until they've done something to suggest it's undeserved. Likewise, they receive respect if they earn it.
