Very little. Its a naturally occurring phenomenon. In the late 1970's there was equally serious discussion about global cooling.
IMO its just a concerted effort for government to take even more control over our lives. There are plenty of "elitists" who consider themselves to be wiser and smarter than the population as a whole. These "elitists" truly believe that if they were only in charge of everything it would be a perfect world. Unfortunately, they refuse to understand that they possess, at best, only a minute fraction of the knowledge of the entire population. There is no one single person who knows how to make a pencil. It requires the combined knowledge of many.
History is filled with dire predictions made by "experts". One recent example is Vance Packard. In 1960 he wrote "The Wastemakers". In it, he confidently predicted that, at then-current demand, the United States oil reserves would be exhausted in 13 years. In 1973 the known reserves were higher than in 1960 - after 13 years of increasing demand. Opps. Missed that one. Ditto for Paul Ehrlich with his book "The Population Bomb".
If you'd like an informed look at how the "elitist" mind "works", read "The Vision of the Anointed: Self-Congratulation As A Basis For Social Policy" by Thomas Sowell. Another worthwhile book by Dr. Sowell is "Basic Economics: A Citizen's Guide To the Economy". An economics book by a professor of economics but written without the charts, graphs and jargon of an economics text.

Your question assumes that man kind is to blame for global warming....that is a grave and threating assumption. I encourage you to do some research on the topic of man made global warming. Start with checking out this webliography that has many links and sources that tell the other side of the man made global warming theory. Also, try and watch John Stossel's "Give me a Break" segment on 20/20 on Friday Oct 19th, he has been doing lots of research on the topic and his conclusion is far from yours and many others assumption about climate change.

Pollution control is a multi billion dollar business. Why would anyone think that nothing is being done?
Many people want to reduce co2 emissions even further. However a coalition of environmentalist and coal miners are preventing nuclear power from becoming a viable technology.
