In music, an alto or contralto is a singer with a vocal range somewhere between a tenor and a mezzo-soprano. The term is used to refer to the lowest female singing voice, or to a kind of male singing voice utilizing falsetto called a countertenor. Alto pieces normally span between G below middle C to the E a tenth above middle C.

Alto is the lower range of boys' voices, the higher range is treble. In women, the high and low ranges are soprano and contralto.

It means "high" - this is because it was originally the highest of the male registers, the female equivalent being "contralto" - "counter-high"

i'm no longer particular what you mean, yet i'm deliberating "head voice" and "chest voice." The "head voice" is the gentle, ethereal one and a "chest voice" is what you take advantage of once you're belting out a music.
