You need to be yourself...hopefully that is a person who is friendly, honest, polite and fun to be around. If you are considering this "too much trouble", I wonder whether or not you will find many people to like you. Any relationship takes work, those worth having and maintaining are easier than others, but even they are always a work in progress.

By "without going into too much trouble" you don't mean "without getting into too much illegal activities". Right?
Good. Now to my answer.
1) If you have to go to the trouble of getting people to like you, you have already lost. Nobody likes anyone who is obviously trying hard to be liked.
2) Most strangers around you don't really care to like or dislike you. They couldn't care less about you even if you showered regularly and were drop-dead attractive.
3) All strangers would kill to like you if you were rich. Even if you had a face that was a twin with a horse's anus.
4) The craving to be liked by others (other than family,spouse/significant other, boss, and your God), is a natural need from birth until you are about seventeen. If you still have the craving-need after seventeen, you are one sick puppy. Get help. By "help" I do not mean 'join a cult'.
5) After seventeen? I haven't a clue anymore because it's been such a long time since I was seventeen. But, I do know I don't give a rat's snot anymore about who likes or dislikes me. Most people, and sometimes even me, deserve to be nuked, anyway.

well i take it that "going into too much trouble" means not being liked. the only thing u can do is be yourself and look the person in the eye and talk. if u dont, they feel ur not giving them much importance and obviously their interest starts fading.
another very imp. thing is tht u hv to allow them to talk too and u should be a very good listener. if u go on blabbering, they'll think ur too boring

If you don't want to put much effort into it then you probably won't have much success. Everything in life that means something takes a lot of effort in order to have. The harder it is to achieve, the more satisfying it is to finally have.

I'm more interested in knowing why you have a need for people to like you?
Sure we all like to be liked, but, we cant like everyone and everyone cant like us. its called being individual.
Try and like yourself.

Do not be yourself.
Pander to everyone around you.
If you be yourself, you're bound to piss some people off.
