If you do it frequently for a long time you destroy a portion of your brain due to alcohol poisoning. Alcohol definitely destroys brain cells if you drink excessively for a long time.

Excesses of alcohol are particularly damaging to the nervous system. The brain, like other organs, has a large “functional reserve,” so many cells may be destroyed without the appearance of disturbing symptoms. But, unlike what happens to other organs, the damage here may be permanent. Brain scanners have shown that, not only alcoholics, but social drinkers who have more than they ought to, experience an actual shrinkage of the brain.
Alcohol’s effect on the nervous system may become manifest in loss of memory. A person may remember drinking, but the next morning he cannot recall how he got home or where he parked his car. Shakiness and lack of muscle coordination, not merely for a few hours, but on a prolonged basis give further evidence that the nervous system is being impaired.

It is destroying brain cells, and the cells of your organs, too. I read in a reputable magazine once that those blackouts indicate the person is an alcoholic. You might want to go to some Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and ask them if they know for sure. Here is a list of questions my union published in our union magazine. It is titled, "These Twenty Questions Can Save Your Life -ARE YOU AN ALCOHOLIC?
(answer yes or no to each question)
1.) Do you lose time from work due to drinking?
2.) Is drinking making your home-life unhappy?
3.) Do you drink because you are shy with other people?
4.) Is drinking affecting your reputation?
5.) Have you ever felt remorse after drinking?
6.) Have you gotten into financial difficulties as a result of your drinking?
7.) Do you turn to lower companions and an inferior environment when drinking?
8.) Does your drinking make you careless of your families welfare?
9.) Has your ambition decreased since drinking?
10.) Do you crave a drink at definite times daily?
11.) Do you want a drink the next morning?
12.) Does drinking cause you to have difficulty sleeping?
13,) Has your efficiency decreased since drinking?
14.) Is drinking jeopardizing your job?
15.) Do you drink to escape from worries or troubles?
16.) Do you drink alone?
17.) Have you ever had a complete loss of memory as a result of drinking?
18.) Has your physician ever treated you for drinking?
19.) Do you drink to build up your self-confidence?
20.) Have you ever been to a hospital or institution as a result of your drinking?
If you answered YES to even one of these questions, there is a warning that you may be an alcoholic. If you answered YES to two, the chances are that you are an alcoholic. If you answered YES to three or more, you are definitely an alcoholic. "

Apparently so, but you have to see it in view of the fact that you have millions of brain cells and only a few die. They also die from old age. They cannot be replaced. I think it's probably a combination of both. Why are you drinking so much? You're destroying your health.

thats bad..I was getting into that habit at 21, & then 1 night [few weeks ago] i woke up at 4/5am & couldnt remember anything! My friends were gone! n had left me at the party!
Now I can either choose to be mad at them for leaving me w/a bunch of strangers, or I can learn to take responsibility.
Even though it was wrong for my friends to leave me, they are not responsible for my actions, I had more fault. I need to learn to drink to a certain limit, Anything can happen while your gone! and yes u are killing brain cells

YES,YES,YES of course you are damaging your brain cells. My brother is an alcoholic and he has black outs all the time, he's been in and out of hospital with alcohol related illnesses - the latest being alcohol induced epilepsy and the Dr said he only has another three years to live, because he's damaged himself that badly......So it might be a good idea to steer clear of the alcohol, it's deadly.
