I worked at one while in highschool. It was amazing how many of these people never had any family members come to visit them, ever. I had one veteran tell me the nursing home was more of a nightmare than war, he felt he lost his freedom and his family cared more about money then him.

Why are we sending our loved ones to these lonely hell holes?

Many of these people still would have been fine living alone, but the familys wanted to just deal with it at a convinent time for them and sell the "real estate" while the market was hot.

Before you put a loved one in a nursing home, make sure you spend a few nights there yourself and listen to the people who are ressidnets.

I still don't like the concept of nursing homes, most of those people could be with their familes yet.

Having worked at one, I know staff tried the best to take care of them, but i had co-workers who admited to stealing/abusing resisdents they did not like.

Why are nursing homes such a popular option?

nursing homes are popular because the people are too busy with their own lives and their own activities to take time out and take care of their old family members....they think that the oldies are a waste of time....they no longer care for them...so they dump their old relatives in nursing homes and let the people there take care of them...

i am thankful that most of my countrymen still believe in taking care of old relatives....there are some who choose to put them in nursing homes but majority take care of these relatives at home...we still believe that we owe our old relatives a great deal and that we will not be where we are right now if not for them....we have not forgotten our beginnings...

i agree with you...it is heartwrenching to see people in nursing homes who seldomly (if not, none at all) get visitors...its a sad fact that their families no longer care for them and find them useless....

Most people do not put their parents in nursing homes. But more and more people are suffering from Alzheimer's disease and an advanced case is impossible to live with unless you can afford round the clock nursing care. Also some people are so disabled that they can not look after their personal care, and do not want their children doing it for them. For people who raised children that are as selfish as the ones you described, I can not help but wonder if they were really as unselfish and caring as most parents are when they were raising these selfish children. I also see a lot of people neglecting their children. It may be a case of what comes around goes around.

I worked in one too and they are sad. Most family members can no longer care for their family members and cannot hire private care. If I live in one or put my family member in one I would be so sad
