It really depends on your cat's weight. And it depends on the calories in the food.
The average cat can eat between 20-30 calories per pound per day. So if your cat weighs 8 pounds, he could eat between 160 and 240 calories per day to maintain his weight. EDIT: I would stick to the lower end of this scale unless your cat is quite active. If you fed at the higher rate, weight gain could occur.
If the food claims 250 calories per can, and the can is 5.5-6 oz, he could eat up to a can per day.
Long story short, a 5.5-6oz can per day is probably fine for most cats.
EDIT: Sorry about the funky link below - just remove the spaces and it'll work. I'm getting those blasted 999 errors again and for whatever reason they seem to happen sometimes when I use links - the only way I can get it to work is to add the spaces so it's not read as a URL.

Your nine-month-old cat is still growing and needs more protein for muscle growth and development. However, most cats will eat as much as placed before them and, if your cat has been neutered (which it should have been by now), too much food will pack on fat, not muscle. A good rule of thumb is to feed it the small tins (85 grams) of better brands once a day in the morning. In the evening you can give your cat good dry food and keep it to about two tablespoons. When the cat is about a year old, start to reduce the wet food until you are giving it a half can a day. Always provide lots of water and don't let your kitty fool you into thinking it's starving. In addition, get some interactive toys so you can play with your cat and help it to exercise and further build those muscles. And it's OK if your kitty sleeps a lot. Cats sleep more than 20 hours a day normally.

i don't know in oz anymore but my cats eat 2 tins of cat food. and 120g of dry food between three cats (2 adults and a kitten) a tin is 400g and an 1oz is approx 25g. if this is any help. also it depends on the cat as some will eat more than this and others less. don't give too much dry food as it is like us eating hamburgers and chips everyday.
it works out roughly that my cats eat 260g and 40g dry each this is over the course of a day in three meals.
i hope this helps

I know one cat who can put down 3 six ounce cans of wet food a day, but she's really stuffed after that much.
Normally a can to a can and a half (the 6 ounce ones). If they eat and walk away, check to see how much they're putting in their stomach at any one time, then you can put that amount down three to four times a day, keeping the can covered with plastic wrap so it doesn't dry out.

It depends on the size and age of the cat. Give your local vet a call.
