High cholesterol can be hereditary and some people suffer it even if they have a healthy life style. Given how young you are I would say that you may find a family history of high cholesterol.

Vegetarianism doesn't eliminate cholesterol as you can get it in junk foods, dairy foods and some bread sources that are high in trans fats.

Speak to your doctor about a good low cholesterol diet as cholesterol lower drugs can effect the liver and should only be used when diet alone is not aiding in lowering of it.

Unfortunately, some people can eat healthy and exercise daily and still have increased cholesterol levels. You can thank your relatives for that. You can follow a cholesterol lowering diet (can be given by your doc) or if serious enough you may have to be put on a statin to lower your cholesterol. Good luck!
