Get a shelty. As the former owner of 2 chows (they're great dogs) I have found that they are overly protective and can be aggressive. My husband works in an ER and when dog bites come in it is often done by a chow.
Shelties are very friendly and if you are ever planning on a family (remember a dog is about a 15 year commitment) a shelty will integrate better with a new person and children.
Love the name Spencer for a shelty, it's really cute!

If you want a dog who......
- Is conveniently-sized, elegant and graceful
- Has a lovely coat that comes in a variety of striking colors
- Is athletic and animated, a swift light-footed runner and jumper
- Has a "soft" personality (sweet, gentle, sensitive)
- Is peaceful with strangers and other animals
- Is bright and attentive and learns very quickly
A Shetland Sheepdog may be right for you.
Names for Sheltie: Spenser, Peggy, Leslie, Tika, Lassie

If you don' t ant to deal with......
- Excessive suspiciousness or outright aggression in some lines, or when not socialized properly
- Aggression toward other animals
- Strong-willed mind of his own and a tendency to retaliate if pushed too far, requiring an experienced, confident owner who can take charge without using force
- Regular brushing and combing (Rough variety)
- Heavy shedding
- Serious health problems
- Legal liabilities (public perception, future breed bans, insurance problems, increased chance of lawsuits)
A Chow Chow may not be right for you.
Names for Chow Chow: Tofu, Jack, Tabby

If I had to choose between these two breeds, it would be the Sheltie.

Did you know that the chow chow came from china they are an old breed. They were WAR DOGS & Hunters among other tough things. They can be a formidable foe, very teritorial, protective , instinctive and also loyal, responsive, smart. They need alot of exercise & play or they make their own fun(at your expence, shoes make great toys to wreck)The CHOW CHOW is a dog you comit to,it will comit to you. Not a dog to get lightly(or a hug toy)

I love chows. I had them growing up and they were the best dogs ever. They loved to be cuddled and get attention. They were allowed inside and would sleep with you and be your foot rest when watching tv. You just need to check out the breeder well and look at the family lines. They do make great dogs. Ours were never aggressive but everyone was scared of them because as a friend put it they looked like black bears.

Those breeds are VERY different from each other. Research both and figure out which best suits your lifestyle and the care you can provide. They both need grooming. You should never choose a dog based on looks. It would be horrible if you got one breed without researching it and found it didn't fit your lifestyle. Meet with people who own those breeds and reputable, and responsible breeders who can help you out.
