The reason why I ask is because I am writing a book and in the book the assassin is looking through an infrared scope and I was wondering would he be able to count the number of people in a structure by counting heat signitures? Or would it not work that well?

YES....With the newest technologies,Infra Red Scanners can scan and in fact pick up human images thru thermal imaging. (AKA: Heat Signatures..You are correct)Since the body is a natural heat source these devices will not only allow one to see human outlines thru walls (Concrete too), but they will also show and body movements in real time.Each person even when they are grouped together emit a reddish brown glow with a yellow toned core thermal image. They only time the images merge or are hard to differentiate between, are when two people hug or are physically very close to each other. You can also see weapons that those individuals might also be carrying. These devices are used often by Law Enforcement agencies worldwide and the Military in the Iraq war........

No. But they do see heat sources depending on insulation,wall thickness and building material. You are not going to see much of anything through 18''of cement wall, but you will be able to see in a little better detail through a regular house wall. You can also bet the military has something that beats the hell out of what I say.

infrared scopes see thru buildings and see "Shadows", like heat sources, inside the building..

Yes, they see items as heat, anything that puts out heat, so humans, cats, dogs.... stuff like that... I got to use one when I was in Bosnia.... Im in the Amy...it was really wild.

No, they just enable the user to see objects in the dark, they are not x-ray devices.
