Dennett or Hitchens?

Have both; which should I read first and why?

2007-10-17 20:05:31 · 21 answers · asked by Dashes 6 in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

Addendum:
I actually should have mentioned that I have already read the following:
The God Delusion
The Atheist Universe
God: The Failed Hypothesis
and other recommendations are appreciated :-)

To Blazin_frizzard and other morons: If you can't answer the question, don't.

Hitchens is a bit of a broadside, but witty and very engagingly written.

Dennett's is a bit more serious.

Hitchens is a neoconservative weenie. I'd go with Dennett. Although I haven't read "Darwin's Dangerous Idea." "Breaking the Spell" was good though.

I wasn't crazy about God is Not Great. He's a witty writer, but a bit pretentious for my tastes. I prefer The God Delusion or God: The Failed Hypothesis.

Jerry-no, he didn't. That was a lie told only in the US by someone who wasn't even there-and she waited over 30 years to mention it. Look up 'Lady Hope.'

Hitchens can be a bit of a jerk, so Read Dennett. I also suggest reading anything by Bart Erhman.

likely a robust factor. evaluate this regardless of the truth that, were you an atheist by technique of selection, by technique of default or by technique of another skill? in case you in basic terms grew up no longer believing yet no longer extremely questioning about it, you likely do no in good structure the concept of a "actual atheist". those that "convert to" or stay atheist by technique of wide awake selection oftentimes achieve this with some idea to the justifications and are not very likely to modify their minds. those that by no skill extremely make the attempt to appreciate their beliefs or lack there of, are oftentimes extremely swayed one way or the different. i turned right into a Christian with a deep expertise of my faith and courting with God, yet on a close study of the info, i realized that a lot I had discovered become baseless. i won't be able to pass back till there is extremely strong info that its the most ideal selection (i.e. till the Bible is easily supported by technique of compelling info).

If you're already an atheist then you don't really need to read either. I'd suggest "Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid" by Douglas Hofstadter instead.

ATHEISM: literally a system of belief which denies the existence of God. The term as generally used, however, is highly ambiguous. Its meaning varies
(a) according to the various definitions of deity, and especially
(b) according as it is
(i.) deliberately adopted by a thinker as a description of his own theological standpoint, or
(ii.) applied by one set of thinkers to their opponents. As to (a), it is obvious that atheism from the standpoint of the Christian is a very different conception as compared with atheism as understood by a Deist, a Positivist, a follower of Euhemerus or Herbert Spencer, or a Buddhist.
so really your answer cannot be answered by a two answered definition

I haven't even heard of the first one.

Four more:

The atheist universe
