How do you find out about your familys history?

With mine, I started out with my grandparents' names, birth dates, death dates (if they have passed on, and if not, then THEIR parents' names and dates), and worked backwards in time. Gather all the info you can from your living relatives and compare stories, dates, names, etc. If you have a membership to www.ancestry.com, it is a BIG help (you can get a 2 week free trial with them). If not, try their sister site, www.rootsweb.com. The LDS site, www.familysearch.org, has names dating back to the 10th century--if not earlier--and it is free. Several sites have message boards where you can look through the surname boards and find people who are searching for the same info you are.
